Province boosts use of ethanol
HURON -BRUCE — The
province will require that
gasoline sold in Ontario
contain an average of five
per cent ethanol by 2007,
a positive step for farmers,
the environment and the
economy, MPP Carol
Mitchell announced last
week.
Ethanol is a cleaner -
burning fuel, so this
means cleaner air. It's
made from agricultural
crops, so this will be a
major boost for rural com-
munities.
Ethanol is a high-octane
fuel additive made from
agricultural crops. It is
blended with conventional
gasoline and results in
cleaner fuel combustion
and fewer emissions.
Ontario's 2007 target for
ethanol would be equiva-
lent to taking 200,000
vehicles off the road or
reducing annual GHG
emissions by about
800,000 tonnes. It has the
potential to spark 3,000
new jobs and as much as
$500 million in new
investment in rural
Ontario.
Effective Jan. 1, 2007, a
wholesaler's annual gaso-
line sales must achieve an
average of at least five per
cent ethanol content. This
may be accomplished by
the actual blending of
ethanol or through the
trading of renewable fuel
credits.
"The province will work
with farmers and industry
to ensure this initiative
benefits all Ontarians,"
said Agriculture Minister
Steve Peters.
Earlier this week the
province also announced it
is increasing the supply of
clean, renewable energy
by giving the go-ahead to
ten projects that will pro-
vide enough power for
over 100,000 homes. The
projects — which include
waterpower and landfill
gas projects as well as five
new wind farms will bring
an estimated $700 million
of new investment to
Ontario.
The McGuinty govern-
ment is also making it eas-
ier for homeowners to buy
clean, renewable energy
systems by extending the
existing retail sales tax
rebate. The new rebate
applies to wind energy,
micro hydro -electric and
geothermal energy sys-
tems that are installed in
residential premises after
March 27, 2003 and
before Nov. 26, 2007.
