The Times Advocate, 2004-10-13, Page 7Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Exeter Times–Advocate Girl Guides of Canada members Jenn Wigle, daughter of Jean Wigle of Exeter, and Lindsay Corbett, daughter of Jeff and Sheila Corbett of Hensall, received the Chief Commissioner of Canada Gold Award Oct. 3.This is the highest award a girl can receive in Guiding before becoming an adult. The presentation was made by their unit leader, Melody Falconer -Pounder. The girls have been attending leadership training in Bayfield, after com- pleting Pathfinders. Recommendation was made by their leader, based on their dedication to Guiding by helping the junior branches with leadership, interest and time devoted to camping, special activity planning and com- mitment. The girls intend to continue membership in Guiding, as they are trained and capable of taking their place as unit leaders. Corbett will be working with the Bayfield Brownie Pack. Wigle will become a district leader, which entails taking meetings for the unit guider, if for some reason, she is unable to go to her meeting. The girls are entitled to attend district meetings and special functions. Remember that one of the best ways of reducing your risk of flu is frequent and thorough hand washing. The flu virus can live on countertops, doorknobs, telephones for up to 48 hours. These areas are a great source of contamination. Flu is the sixth leading cause of death in seniors. There's increased interest in cooking and eating very hot peppers of different varieties Ijalapeno, habanero, etc). If some of the fluid from these peppers gets on your skin, it can be very irritating. Soap and water doesn't remove it. Use some vegetable oil to get it off your skin. It works. About 150 Canadians are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease each day. By 2031, there will be an estimated 750,000 Canadians with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. Alzheimer's accounts for two-thirds of dementia cases while vascular dementia, caused by clogged brain arteries and strokes accounts for the rest. Half the calls to poison centres in Canada involve children ingesting prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Children between the ages of one and three present the highest risk. Reduce this risk by keeping all medications out of reach of children. Once the doctor prescribes the right drug in the right dose and our pharmacists explain how to take the drug, ifs your job to take it correctly. Forty per cent of people are non-compliant with the doctor's orders. Exercise good compliance. Harvest Hop returns to Lucan LUCAN — It's time to kick up your heels for a worthy cause.
