The Times Advocate, 2004-09-15, Page 9Wednesday, September 15, 2004 Exeter Times–Advocate 9 Vandals smash church windows: shutters needed By Hazel Davis SAINTSBURY CORRESPONDENT SAINTSBURY - In place of an enjoyable evening prayer service at St. Patrick's Sept. 5, the congregation were met with shock, horror and disgust when they saw the devastation. The original windows and screens on the east side of Racey Memorial Hall along with the aluminum storms and screens (a gift from Helen McDonald and the late Maurice MacDonald and family), were all com- pletely ruined. Curtains and table- cloths nearest the win- dows were also destroyed, with the bro- ken glass part way across the hall. A partial Louisville Slugger was in the parish hall and another partial slugger bat was found outside along with ice packs and beer caps. The tip of an umbrella was stuck in a screen. This is wicked and we all feel very saddened, violated and helpless. Six weeks ago a golf ball was used to smash a similar window in the kitchen, and more beer caps were left for us to clean up. Makeshift repairs had to be made due to weather warnings and the elements. Anyone with shutters stored away in a shed or basement, we would be happy to receive them if they are not needed else - w h e r e. Please phone 227-1369 if you can help. Evening prayer A short evening prayer was led by Bob MacGillivray and assist- ed by Corbin MacGillivray and Josh White. Service closed with prayers and evening hymn. A short business meeting fol- lowed with needs for repairs and preparing for Harvest Service Sept. 26 with Rev. Stanley Jay. Weekend service Sept. 11 and 12 at St. Patrick's was cancelled due to members working on the parish hall. Vehicle hit The community thanks God for the safety of Ron and Margaret Carroll whose vehicle was hit from behind at Highway 4 and Whalen Line. The Carrolls had to be cut out of their vehicle and were transferred to South Huron Hospital for cuts, bruises and a num- ber of ongoing tests. Cousins Gord and Connie Noels of Grand SAINNSBURY NEWS Bend and John and Joyce Dickey of Centralia along with Davis and MacGillivray families vis- ited with Hugh and Hazel Davis over the past two weeks. ACW Council Hazel Davis attended Sept. 6 of the two-day overnight ACW Council of the Diocese of Huron held at the Michaelite Fathers Retreat Centre near London. Rev. Kim Van Allen was guest speaker and gave two wonderful presentations, In the Image of God. It was a marvellous day. A small brown bag auction was held in the evening with approxi- mately $200 to be sent to our companion dio- cese in South Africa. On Sunday the Davises enjoyed service at 10:30 a.m. at St. James' Anglican Church, Stratford, 15th Sunday after Pentecost with Rev. Dr. Lorne Mitchell offi- ciant and celebrant. This is the fifth church in Perth Deanery in 2004 for Hazel to visit as Perth Deanery ACW represen- tative. All the churches are updating their histo- ry for the ACW Perth Deanery Binder. A number of family members have been vis- iting the Carrolls recent- ly.
