St.Thomas buries Fury 6-1
EXETER — The Exeter
Fury were in action
Sunday at home, but were
never in the game, losing
6-1 to St. Thomas.
St. Thomas jumped on
the Fury early, picking up
a loose ball and beating
keeper Nathan Holmes
from in close for a 1-0
lead. Exeter responded
shortly after when Marty
DeBruyn fired a free kick
around the wall that the
keeper missed when it
skipped on the wet grass
under his hands.
The score didn't remain
tied for long as the visitors
grabbed the lead for good
and then padded their goal
totals to take a 4-1 lead
into the second half
OPP concerned about cycling safe
MIDDLESEX — Schools are out for the
summer holidays and the kids will be
taking to the roadways enjoying their
free time. Middlesex OPP officers have
assisted with many bike rodeos in vari-
ous communities this spring, spending
time reminding children to use cycling
safety rules. But parents also need to be
diligent about kids' safety while cycling.
Your child probably has a bike helmet,
but do they wear it? If not, you as a
parent may be held accountable.
The Highway Traffic Act regula-
tions state every child under 18
years of age must wear a hel-
met while riding a bicycle. If a
child is found riding without a
helmet, it is the parent who is held
responsible and can be given a ticket
for $75. Persons age 18 and over are
advised to continue wearing their hel-
met. Research shows that helmets can
be extremely effective in preventing head
injuries.
Buy a helmet for your child that has a
safety approval sticker on the inside, and
be sure of a good fit.
Many kids found riding by the OPP
have helmets that are not adjusted prop-
erly. The helmet should sit squarely on
the head, not falling forward or back and
should not wobble side to side. The side
clips join two safety straps that should
form an inverted "A" shape on the side of
the head. The strap should be tightened
so only one finger can be placed under-
neath the chinstrap. If the helmet doesn't
fit properly, it would be of little use in a
collision. About three-quarters of all
cycling fatalities involve head injuries.
Some municipalities in Middlesex have
partnered with the OPP to encourage
safe cycling with the use of a helmet. In
the Villages of Parkhill and Glencoe, if a
child is spotted by an officer wearing a
bicycle helmet, the child is issued a lucky
ticket. The ticket is placed in a draw held
at the end of the summer for two new
bicycles in each community. In Glencoe,
the Rotary Club and Lion's sponsor the
purchase of the bicycles, while the
Optimist's and Lion's Club in
Parkhill are the sponsors. Kids
can be entered into the draw as
many times as they are ticketed.
This program has been running
in these communities for the past
five years successfully - with kids often
riding around the village looking for an
OPP cruiser.
If you are in a motor vehicle and
encounter a cyclist on the roadway -
slow down and leave a wide berth of
space for the cyclist - especially if you
have a heavy vehicle. Conversely, cyclists
should ride single file on the roadway.
Cycling clubs will often travel in large
groups for safety. The OPP receives com-
plaints from motorists who encounter
large groups of cyclists riding side-by-
side and holding up traffic.
Cyclists and motorists should simply
use common sense and courtesy when
sharing the road.

of Transportation Web site under Traffic
Safety at: www.mto.gov.on.ca.

"We looked like we were
asleep out there in the first
half," Fury spokesperson
Jason McFalls stated.
"They beat us to the ball
and we didn't challenge
them enough."
The Fury came out in the
second half trying to settle
down and mount an attack
to get back in the contest.
Exeter managed a few
chances on goal but were
turned away each time by
the St. Thomas goalie. The
visitors kept up their
attack and were successful
on two more occasions to
finish off the Fury. Tim
Hundey had a good
chance to beat the keeper
late in the game but his
shot was deflected away
from the goal.
"It was an ugly game.
We never showed up
tonight but we know we
can play much better than
that. It was embarrassing
out there," McFalls said.
The loss drops Exeter's
record to 4-3-1, with their
next game Sunday in
Woodstock.
Iron Kids Triathlon
EXETER — The fourth annual David Daters
Memorial Iron Kids Triathlon will take place Sunday at
MacNaughton Park, starting at 8:30 a.m.
Last year, $3,000 was raised for the oncology floor at
the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario. There were
80 participants and more than 30 volunteers.
Age groups range from under six, up to 15 and over.
Participants will start the race with a swim in the out-
door pool, followed by a bike ride up Andrew Street to
Victoria Street, then east to Pryde Boulevard and south
to Huron Street. The older children will continue east
on Huron Street to the first or second concessions. The
run portion will follow the new trail from the park,
along the river towards Morrison Dam.
Registration forms and pledge sheets are available at
Kicks Aquatic Centre with an entry fee of $20.
Racers will receive a T-shirt, participation medal and
pizza lunch. Awards will be given to the top three fin-
ishers in each age category and the top two teams in
the relays for each age group. There will also be a
prize for the most pledges raised.
Volunteers are still needed to assist with the race.
Anyone interested should call Deb Oke at 235-2079. All
registrations need to be in by Saturday.
Rangers tie Gators
ZURICH — Last Sunday the Zurich Rangers played to
a 3-3 tie against the Goderich Gators.
Goderich scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead
before Zurich's Neil Beauchamp singled home Dwayne
LaPorte in the second inning to even the score at 1-1.
Goderich then regained the lead in the second inning on
three singles.
Zurich would later score runs in both the fourth and
fifth inning on RBI singles by Joe Clifford and LaPorte to
take a 3-2 lead. However, Goderich would score one last
time in the sixth inning and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Clifford pitched five innings for the Rangers in the tie.
The Rangers travel to Wroxeter for a tournament on
the weekend.
