Credit card scam aimed at unsuspecting card holders
HURON - Huron OPP
wants to warn credit
card holders of the
most recent credit card
scam.
According to an OPP
press release, victims
give out credit card
information over the
telephone on the belief
it's protecting them
from credit card fraud.
The perpetrators of
the crime say they
work for the security
and fraud department
of the credit card com-
pany. They give their
badge number and
claim they are calling
because the customer's
card has been flagged
for an unusual pur-
chase pattern, quoting
the price of an item the
card holder did not
buy.
Having confirmed the
purchase was not made
ny the customer, they
say the company will
issue a credit to the
account, ask for verifi-
cation of the customer's
address and say a fraud
investigation is under-
way.
The customer is then
given a six -digit securi-
ty number and is asked
to verify a three -digit
number on the back of
their card.
Anyone who receives
a call asking for this
type of information
should be aware credit
card companies do not
phone customers to ask
for personal informa-
tion.
Credit card holders
also need to guard their
cards while travelling,
using these tips:
• Never leave credit
cards in a place where
they could easily be
stolen, especially in
your car where a
majority of credit card
thefts occur.
• Always protect your
PIN when accessing an
automated bank
machine. Take care to
make sure no one can
observe you entering
