Exeter women split pair of games First hole -in -one for Exeter golfer
EXETER – This past
week saw the Exeter
Womens soccer team
split the results of their
two games.
On Tuesday, the locals
hosted the red hot Sarnia
Spirit.
The Spirit with a record
of 8-0-0 were not expect-
ing the reception that
they received.
Katherine Esch put on a
dazzling display to lead
the scoring with the first
goal of the game coming
after sixteen minutes
when she connected with
a Kristen Moore pass to
blast past the Spirit
goalie.
Sarnia scored shortly
after to tie the game.
Four minutes into the
second half Esch again
connected with a free
kick from Moore to take
Exeter into its second
lead which they held
midway into the second
half.
Sarnia then scored from
the penalty spot as the
defence attempted to stop
a rush on goal.
Near the end, the Spirit
scored the winner, with
Exeter running out of
steam with no substi-
tutes.
This was one of the
most spirited games of
the season with the
eleven players putting on
an excellent display.
The team travelled to
Mount Brydges on
Sunday to play Delko and
after twelve minutes
were ahead on a Moore
goal after she accepted a
through ball from
Katherine Esch.
The score remained 1-0
at the half and after 29
minutes of the second
half, Esch scored from a
Beth Hundey pass.

EXETER — "It hit on
the green and rolled in
the cup,"is how Exeter
resident Bill Wheeler
described his hole -in -one
July 21 at Exeter Golf
Course.
Wheeler was on the
number three hole with
his wife Pat when he
made the 146 yard shot.
It is the first hole -in -
one for Wheeler, who
has been golfing for 30
years.
He said he had been
having a good day on the
course and the shot felt
right as soon as he hit it.
"I knew it was going to
come on the green."
Wheeler is having a
trophy made out of the
ball and received a towel
and a medallion from the
course in recognition of
his feat.

Fishing for $50,000 on 'The Last Cull'

British Columbia. McLaren recently put his fishing skills to the test on The Last
Cull', a reality fishing show with a prize of $50,000 that will air in September.

EXETER — After fishing
most of his life both as a
job and a hobby, Jeff
McLaren got the chance
to land the biggest catch
of all in a fishing contest
recently.
The Exeter resident was
one of 50 fishermen
selected to compete in a
new reality show named
'The Last Cull' with a
grand prize of $50,000.
Taping took part for the
show in early July but
results will not be dis-
closed until September
when the show airs.
All contestants have
signed non disclosure
agreements.
Born in London,
McLaren studied
Aquaculture at Sir
Sanford Fleming College
where his talent with a
fishing rod fed him before
he graduated with hon-
ours.
After a few years fishing
and working the waters
of British Columbia,
McClaren was in Toronto
where he again put his
talent to use at a private
fly fishing club.
Since moving back to
Exeter, McLaren has
worked as an electrician
and fished whenever he
could.
After seeing the notice
for 'The Last Cull',
McClaren sent in an
application and received
a reply immediately, with
the show's producers say-
ing "you're what we're
looking for."
The show is based on a
10 -day shoot of 13
episodes filmed in North
Bay on Lake Nipissing.
The 50 competitors
were to start in two -per-
son teams in the opening
round with half eliminat-
ed immediately.
The rest would progress
through various levels
such as the team battle,
survivor round, the cull
and the championship
round with the final three
contestants.
The winner would
receive the cash prize as
well as a production deal
to shoot a pilot for their
own angling television
series.
The other two finalists
receive a guest host
appearance on the
nationally televised 'Fish
n' Canada' show.
While not able to say
much, McClaren said it
was an excellent time.
"It was like we were in
high school again... We
were fishing with some
huge pros. It was a blast."
The show will debut
Sept. 18 on several net-
works including Outdoor
Life Network Canada.
