RONA MS Bike Tour raises more than $400,000
By Mary Simmons
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GRAND BEND — More
than $400,000 was raised
on the weekend during
the RONA MS Bike Tour.
The event saw cyclists
from across Ontario,
cycling 150 kilometres
from Grand Bend to
London and back again.
This was the 14th year for
the event and more than
680 cyclists and 100 vol-
unteers were involved.
Lori Anne McNulty,
senior manager of
fundraising events for the
MS Society was extremely
happy with the results.
"It's unbelievable how
the event has grown —
especially over the past
few years. We've grown
by about 200 cyclists since
2003," she said.
Joanne Hendrix of
Forest has participated in
the event for the past six
years and her sister,
Margaret Romphf of
Grand Bend has joined on
the trek from Grand Bend
to London for the past
three years.
Hendrix said she initially
got involved because their
father had MS and would
encourage others to par-
ticipate.
"I love it," she said. "It's
absolutely wonderful and
organized wonderfully ."
Tour leaders Shaun and
Vicki Calcatt of St.
Thomas say they have
met a lot of people
through their participa-
tion in the event, including
people who have multiple
sclerosis.
Shaun has been cycling
in the tour for 12 years
and Vicki joined in the
fundraising cause six
years ago.
"It's a lot of fun," Vicki
said. "You get to see a lot
of the same people every
year."
She said it sounds like a
long distance to cycle, but
with the stops along the
way organized by the MS
Society, it makes it go
quickly.
Cyclists were able to
stop for a rest and
refreshments at five
checkpoints on the jour-
ney from Port Blake
Conservation Area to
UWO Saugeen Maitland
Hall.
In addition to funding
research, the MS Society
provides services for peo-
ple who have MS as well
as family members, care-
givers and health care
professionals.
Multiple sclerosis is an
unpredictable, at times
disabling, disease of the
central nervous system —
the brain and spinal cord.
For unknown reasons,
the body's immune system
malfunctions and starts
attacking the myelin
which protects the central
nervous system.
The result may be symp-
toms such as visual distur-
bances, extreme fatigue,
balance problems and
altered sensation.
The average age of diag-
nosis is 30, but cases of
MS have also been diag-
nosed in childhood, as
well as in people in their
50s.

multiple sclerosis and the
RONA MS Bike Tour is

Juniors stymied at plate for two games
CREDITON - The
Crediton junior girls
fastball team was
stymied at the plate for
two games last week. A
slow start for both
games with the lack of
bats caused the team's
demise.

Dorchester
Sportswear 7
Allowing four runs in
the first inning usually
means a small obstacle
for the junior team to get
over but last week, that
obstacle was too large to
overcome. Crediton
could not seem to score
runs leaving 12 players
on the bases throughout
the game.
The Dorchester squad
is a very talented group
of fastball players who
showed their aggressive-
ness and skill through-
out the whole game.
Amber Preszcator led
her team at the plate
with a double and single,
Jessica Bray had two
singles while single hits
apiece came from the
bats of Megan
Preszcator, Kelli Fulton,
Margaret Geurts,
Annette Grotentraast
and Carrie Dixon.

Mental errors and
quiet bats seemed to be
the reasons for
Crediton's scoreless loss
against Oakridge.
Allowing three runs in

seemed to be an obstacle
the local squad could not
