Express in
EXETER — The Exeter Express partici-
pated in the Lakeside tournament over
the weekend.
The Express lost their first game to
Amherstburg 6-1 before defeating a
powerful Erindale team 4-2.
Under the existing tournament format
each of the three teams in Pool A finished
with 1-1 records.
This led to a tie breaking formula based
on runs differential. Erindale had a plus
five, Amherstburg a minus two and
Exeter a minus three.
Exeter played hard in both games and
had the tying and winning runs on base
in their final at bat against Erindale but
failed to drive them in.
Game one versus Amherstburg was a
pitchers duel between Lonnie Hawke and
Amherstburg's Tom Smith for the first
three innings.
The roofed caved in on the Express in
the fourth as they gave up five runs on
four hits and two errors.
Exeter responded with a run in the
fourth on a single by Ryan Fairful.
Amherstburg scored a final rim in the
seventh.
Hawke lasted three and two thirds of an
inning allowing five runs on four hits.
Derek Brown relieved for two innings
giving up no runs on two hits. Dan Masse
pitched the final inning, allowing one run
on two fluke hits.
The Express managed to get only five
singles during the game off the bats of
Fairful, Marty Merner, Hawke, Dan

In game two the Express were short-
handed but played their best defensive
game of the year.
Merner pitched with only a few days
rest and was able to blank Erindale after
they scored two unearned runs in the
first inning.
Erindale had a powerful team with sev-
eral good hitters and had defeated
Amherstburg 9-2 in the afternoon game.
Merner allowed five hits and gave up
four walks while striking out two batters.
Exeter defenders made several out-
standing plays to keep the team in the
game as Erindale batters hit several rock-
ets to the outfield.
The Express rallied in the fifth for two
runs on two walks and hits by Hawke and
Scott Smith.
They scored two more in the sixth on
hits by Adam Leppington, Aaron
Patterson and Hawke.
Needing two more runs the Express had
the bases loaded with one out but were
unable to push across the needed rims.
Exeter had nine hits with three from
Hawke, and two each from Smith and
Leppington.
Aaron Patterson had one and Bobby
Grant had one along with three walks.
The team showed a lot of heart in the
final game, which will hopefully carry
over against Listowel this Friday in
Exeter and against the Royals in
Strathroy Saturday.

Last race for old bird season
LUCAN — Saturday
the Lucan Homing
Pigeon Club flew the
last races of the old
bird season (birds one
year old and over).
The previous night
members of the club
loaded 68 pigeons onto
the special pigeon
transporter for release
at Cornwall, Ont., a dis-
tance of 576 kilometres
from Exeter-Lucan.
In addition, 63 birds
were put aboard for lib-
eration at Brockville,
Ont., a distance of 485
kilometres.
Weather conditions at
sunrise in Cornwall
were good. One half
hour later, at 6:25 a.m.,
the "long" birds were
released.
Checks along the fly-
way indicated unstable
air masses and shifting
winds, but no rain.
Exeter's Al de Haan
calculated, on the basis
of previous records,
that the birds might be
homing between 3-4
p.m.
He was totally elated
when at 3:12 p.m. he
spotted the familiar fly-
ing shape winging in
from the northeast and
dropping onto its loft.
One minute later a
second bird from
Cornwall arrived home.
Justin Veens from
Arkona clocked his first
pigeon from Cornwall at
3:50 p.m.
When the flying times,
the respective distances
and clock variations
were calculated, the
final figures showed the
deHaan bird flew back
at an average speed of
1092 meters
per/minute, whereas
the Veens bird aver-
aged 1092 meters
per/minute. Incredible.
Final overall results
were: de Haan positions
one and three, Justin
Veens positions two,
four and ten.
Norm Hardy took posi-
tions five, six, eight and
nine.
Brendan Cunningham
and Tom Hardy's birds
were probably forced
down by the severe
weather that developed
later in the afternoon.
They homed after they
had dried off.
The Brockville birds
were released at 7:45
a.m. Norm Hardy con-
tinued his winning ways
by placing first and sec-
ond.
Justin Veens, competi-
tive as ever, picked up
positions three, four
and five.
Lucan's Brendan
Cunningham placed
seventh, nosing out de
Haan's bird.
Birds entered by Jim
Southern, from
Kerwood, and Tom
Hardy were rain -
delayed.
The birds missing at
the end of the day
arrived at their home
lofts early Sunday
morning - proof they
were close to home
when they ran (flew?)
into foul weather.
