Express mired in four -game slump
EXETER — The sched-
ule maker dealt the
Exeter Express a mighty
blow as they faced off
with the powerful
Lakeside Lizards, the
perennial league champi-
ons.
The Lizards extended
the Express losing streak
to four games Sunday,
defeating Exeter 10-1.
The Express were able
to field only nine players
plus junior player Terry
Hogg for the contest.
Several players missed the
game due to injury, vaca-
tions or other reasons.
Manager Doug Fairbairn
was forced to play him-
self. Relief pitcher Paul
Elston, who had played an
all -day tournament the
previous day, had to play
half the game as well.
The Express opened the
game in the first inning
with a run -scoring single
from Marty Merner.
After that, it was all
Lakeside.
Merner pitched the first
four innings, allowing five
runs (three earned) on
nine hits. Elston pitched
the fifth, allowing three
runs on one hit. Bobby
Grant tried to hold the fort
over the last three
innings, giving up two
runs on three hits.
Exeter managed only six
hits with Merner having
four of them and Hogg
and Lonnie Hawke adding
one each.
Earlier in the weekend,
the Express dropped a 6-0

decision to the Strathroy
Royals July 9.
The Express bats were
cold again as they man-
aged only five hits off
Strathroy's pitching. Nine
runners were left strand-
ed during the seven -
inning game. The Royals
were able to combine four
hits and six walks off
rookie pitcher Nick Regier
in the first three innings to
take a 5-0 lead.
Jeff Green allowed one
run over three innings on
two hits. This was a third
consecutive solid perfor-
mance by Green.
Grant pitched the sev-
enth, allowing only a
walk.
Exeter's five hits came
from Aaron Patterson
with a double, and Vic
Oliveira and Hawke with
two single each.
Exeter's record is now
at nine wins and seven
losses. When missing
players and injuries are
factored in, the record
shows the team is still in a
close battle for first place
in the league.
The Express will take
part in a tournament
Saturday and Sunday at
Lakeside in London. The
Express play Saturday at
8:30 a.m. against Erindale
at Stronach Park and at
7:30 p.m. against
Amherstburg at LDBA
Park on Adelaide Street.
The top two teams from
this pool advance to the
quarter finals Sunday.
The Express will need to
improve their recent hit-
ting and defensive perfor-
mances to do well at this
tournament. The pitching
has also tailed off recent-
ly, but there is a lot of
potential if it is used prop-
erly.
With the OBA and
league playoffs just a
short time away, manager
Fairbairn believes that
running practices will be
the key to straightening
things around in a hurry.
All players are urged to
attend Friday's practice.

Third consecutive loss
for Exeter Fury
19
EXETER — The Exeter Fury continued in
Woodstock, losing 3-2 in their third consecutive
loss.
For the second game in a row, Exeter fell
behind in the first 10 minutes. A Woodstock
player broke free into the box and Fury keeper
Nathan Holmes tried to steal the ball from him.
He was only able to bring the player down,
resulting in a penalty shot, which was completed
successfully for a 1-0 Woodstock lead.
The home team increased its lead as it moved
the ball in from the corner, finding a man open
at the top of the box. The striker made no mis-
take as he blasted the ball into the top of the net
to put the Fury down two goals.
Exeter replied before the half on a free kick by
Andrew Prout. His shot deflected off a defender
and was bobbled by the Woodstock goalie, allow-
ing Marty DeBruyn to pick up the loose ball and
start the Fury scoring.
The Fury nearly tied the game before the half,
but Matt Strano missed a great chance from in
close.
The Fury came out in the second half looking
for the equalizer, but some confusion in the mid-
dle of the field resulted in a turnover that wound
up in the back of the Fury net. The goal was a
hard shot from outside the box on which Holmes
had no chance to make the save.
Exeter was awarded a penalty shot of their
own when Tim Hundey made a nice run only to
be hauled down in the penalty area. DeBruyn
stepped up and buried the shot to keep the Fury
in the game, but that was the last goal of the day
for Exeter as Woodstock held on for the victory.
"We are going to have to play tougher team
defense in the second half of the season if we
want to gain ground in this tight division," Fury
spokesman Jason McFalls said.
The loss drops the Fury record to
4-4-1 and a tie for third place at
the mid -point of the season.
Exeter has its first Cup game
Wednesday in Nairn and then
resumes league play Saturday in
London against the first place Hispanos.
