Teen study
revealing
Arecent Health Canada study on teens
shows most are not angry, reactionary
and involved in questionable activity,
contrary to what many of the older generation
seem to think.
The study revealed most teens are happy,
healthy and well -adjusted, as we've long sus-
pected. Most said they enjoy school, get along
with their parents and don't often get
depressed. Almost 60 per cent have part-time
jobs.
Most don't want to disappoint their parents,
according to the study, which was conducted by
GPC Research of Ottawa. And more than two-
thirds said their parents or guardians take an
interest in their school work.
Not surprisingly, Canadian youth like to
experiment. One third have tried marijuana,
one in ten tried magic mushrooms. One in five
drinks alcohol regularly. Cigarettes are seen as
more harmful than marijuana, alcohol is
thought to be the least harmful of all vices.
That doesn't seem all too different than when
many of us were teens; nor does a large per-
centage saying "I usually go along with my
friends even if it doesn't feel quite right." Didn't
we all, at some point?
Some other stats do stand out as being partic-
ular to today's young people. Sixty-three per
cent of teens say they worry a lot about their
future. Did we?
Teens of today spend a lot of time with the
mass media; 63 per cent watched two or more
hours of television daily and 13 per cent
watched five or more hours daily. About a third
of respondents said they surfed the Internet for
an hour a day, 17 per cent said they surfed two
hours, 15 per cent said three or four hours!
Interestingly, more than half said they had a
hard time concentrating ... obviously concen-
tration isn't a problem for them when sitting at
the computer or in front of the TV

Summer - best time of year
Summer is one of my favourite times of year.
I look forward every winter to putting away the
layers of clothing, hats, mitts, scarves and boots
and basking in the warmth of the sun.
Despite suffering from seasonal allergies, which
keeps me from being outdoors as much as I'd
like, I love the sights of all the beauty which
sets those allergies.
Although my runny nose and watery eyes
may disagree, I love the sight of a hayfield
and golden -rod along the side of a country
road.
I also enjoy the bounty of garden produce
which can be found throughout the summer
months. In my opinion, nothing beats the
taste of a fresh strawberry plucked out of the
patch.
Although this summer has been fairly wet
and cold, I have had my share of strawber-
ries, and am now looking forward to the
coming raspberries. In the vegetable line, I am
also anxiously awaiting the fresh peas, green
beans and sweet corn, which are slowly ripening.
With summer also comes the memories of sum-
mer vacations and camping trips with friends and
family.
For the past few years my brother and I have
taken my sister's four children on camping trips
with varying degrees of success. I must admit I'm
not the most rugged of sorts and my brother is
not the most patient, so the two of us herding our
nieces and nephews around could lead to some
frustrating times, but we keep going back for
more.

Y FOR MY
UGHTS
And in my family, summer is also the
time for family reunions. On both sides
of my family we gather for a summer
picnic with all my aunts and uncles and
cousins.
On my dad's side of the family, I am
the youngest grandchild — number 25
— which means some of my cousins
have children who are closer in age to
me than they are. At a recent reunion,
it was surprising to see how many of
the great-grandchildren now have chil-
dren of their own. Of course, it also
meant that I, being single and childless,
got the inevitable question of when I
was going to settle down and have some babies of
my own. Why do relatives insist on asking ques-
tions like that? Do they really think I can give a
definitive answer? Let's put it this way, when I
know, they'll know.
And so, despite the ups and downs of the sea-
son, it continues to be my favourite and I hope to
enjoy the coming months. Let's hope the rain is
less frequent and the sun continues to shine.
