Cyclists ready to roll inTour
GRAND BEND — Over
30 Exeter and area resi-
dents are getting ready
to cycle 150 km each in
the upcoming RONA MS
Bike Tour from Grand
Bend to London July 24-
25.
Dave McFalls of
Centralia has cycled in
more than 10 tours. He
participates for many
reasons.
"It motivates me to
keep riding and I have
met great people. It's
relaxed and lots of fun,"
he said.
This year his goal is to
raise at least $1,500.
"When I ask people to
sponsor me, they are
usually quite generous.
They know I'm commit-
ted and it's an important
cause. I train before the
tour and take time off
from my business to par-
ticipate," McFalls
explains.
To prepare for the
ride, he rides for at least
half an hour twice a
week. On at least one
weekend he will ride 30-
35 km two days in a row.
McFalls has become
more informed about
multiple sclerosis over
the years.
"When I started riding
I had heard of MS, but
wasn't really that
informed," he notes.
"I was surprised to
learn that women are
twice as likely as men to
be affected by the dis-
ease."
It bothers McFalls to
think how the disease
affects people.
"With MS you just can't
make your body do what
your mind wants it to,"
he notes.
McFalls also appreci-
ates the support of local
motorists.
"It's a really good
event for a great cause.
If everyone could be con-
siderate of the cyclists
when out driving that
weekend it would be
wonderful."
The RONA MS Bike
Tour is expected to
attract over 650 cyclists.
"Our participants trav-
el from the surrounding
rural areas as well as
large urban areas such
as London, Kitchener -
Waterloo, Toronto and
