The host Portuguese club gave Exeter every- thing they could handle and dominat- ed play for most of the game but were unable to get a goal past Fury keeper Nathan Holmes. Nathan Holmes was the story of the game for Exeter, making several brilliant saves while the Fury defence was under attack in the second half. The Portuguese squad controlled the ball throughout the first half as Exeter looked disorga- nized and a step slow to the ball. Exeter's defence had its hands full trying to handle the speed of the Portuguese strikers, resorting to desperate clearing attempts and last second tackles to keep the shots to a minimum. The Fury caught a break about 10 minutes before the half when Pete Fragiskatos headed the ball over to Marty DeBruyn who was able to finish the play and give Exeter a surprising lead at the half. The Fury were more aggressive in its pursuit of the ball in the second half which resulted in a few more offensive chances. Mike Nedza had the best opportunity as he fired a low shot the keeper had to dive to stop. The closest the Portuguese club came was when they hit the crossbar on a long shot but Holmes was there to quickly grab the loose ball. Late in the game Holmes robbed a Portuguese striker from in close as he Holmes jumped to get his body in front of the shot and pulled the ball in tight so the striker couldn't finish off the play. "It was a long time to hold onto a one -goal lead against such a talented and quick team but we got what we came for and that is three points," Fury spokesperson Jason McFalls stated. "Nathan was amazing. He's a leader on this team and he won us the game today, " McFalls contin- ued.
