Tavistock takes 2-1 lead in finals with pair of wins
By Pat Bolen
TIMESADVOCATE STAFF
TAVISTOCK — The
Tavistock Braves took a
2-1 lead over the Exeter
Hawks in their OHA finals
series with a 6-4 win over
the Hawks at home
Sunday night.
The Braves evened the
series in Exeter Friday
night with a 3-2 win after
the Hawks opened the
series April 5 with an 8-4
win in Tavistock.
The Hawks will try to
even the series tonight
(Wednesday) at 8 p.m. on
home ice before travelling
to Tavistock for game five
Thursday night at 7:30
p.m.
Game six if necessary
will be April 16 in Exeter
at 8 p.m. with game
seven April 18 in
Tavistock at 8 p.m.
The Hawks used their
special teams in game
one to roll to an 8-4 win,
with two power play
goals and three short-
handed, including two on
the short Tavistock power
play.
Jason Stuckless led the
attack with two goals and
an assist, with single
markers from Jeff
Finkbeiner, Pat Clark,
Scott Davies, Daryl
Bourne, Shawn
Sherwood, and Travis
Elder.
Friday night the Hawks
looked as if they would be
in a hole early after a
seven minute penalty in
the first period to Henny
Pfaff for an interference
call and five minutes for
head butting.
But despite the extend-
ed power play, the Braves
were unable to generate
any sustained pressure,
with Exeter goalie Justin
Hayter tested only a cou-
ple of times.
Tavistock took advan-
tage of another power
play late in the period
with Arik O'Connell
putting them up 1-0 with
1:09 left in the period.
The Braves put on pres-
sure early in the second
period, forcing Hayter to
make several saves, espe-
cially on a two-man
advantage for Tavistock.
With Jeff Roes alone in
front, Hayter outwaited
the Tavistock player
before taking the shot in
the pads.
Hayter kept the score
close again later in the
period stopping a short-
handed breakaway by
Matt Trahan.
Tavistock took a 2-0
lead early in the third as
they converted a two on
one, with Trahan taking a
pass and driving a shot
through Hayter.
But the Hawks came to
life midway through the
period with a pair of
goals two minutes apart.
Cutting across the slot,
Davies couldn't beat
Tavistock goalie Kris
Yungblut, but seconds
later Sherwood was left
alone in the same postion
and made no mistake, fir-
ing it past Youngblut.
Just two minutes later,
Joe Nesbitt fired a shot
from the blueline
Yungblut got a piece of
the shot but couldn't
come up with the save,
making it 2-2.
The Hawks continued
to press for the go-ahead
goal but despite a series
of chances couldn't beat
Yungblut, as Sherwood
was stopped on a break-
away and Stuckless fired
a shot just over the net.
The Braves took advan-
tage with three minutes
left, as Roes took a pass
from behind the net and
fired it by Hayter for the
3-2 lead and the win.
Sunday night, after
Tavistock took a 1-0 lead
into the second period,
Elder tied it early before
Davies put the Hawks
ahead with a power play
marker four minutes
later.
But the Braves struck
back with a pair, tying it
at two just over a minute
later, before retaking the
lead with two seconds left
in the period on a power
play.
The Braves increased
its lead 33 seconds into
the third period, before
the Hawks got back with-
in one with a power play
marker of their own at
17:24 by Michael
Carnegie.
But Tavistock restored
its two -goal margin three
minutes later for a 5-3
lead.
Matt Vlemmix got the
Hawks within one goal
with six minutes left, but
it was as close as they
could get and the Braves
sealed the win with an
empty net power play
goal with 13 seconds left.
Exeter Hawk coach
Dave Revington said the
finish of the Hawks hasn't
been good the last two
games."Our puck han-
dling has been poor, and
we're not getting a good
forecheck. The puck is
coming out of the offen-
sive zone too easily."
"They're getting some
really good work out of

we're still struggling with
some penalty issues."
With the Hawks draw-
ing some poorly timed
penalties, Revington said
it was important to main-
tain composure.
"Goals with one second
left in the period and 33
seconds into another
really hurt."
Revington said Chad

Hawks have also lost Pfaff
with a four game suspen-
