The Times Advocate, 2004-04-14, Page 3Wednesday, April 14, 2004 Exeter Times–Advocate 3 Election expenses in EXETER — Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell came in a distant second in spending on the fall election campaign, but still came out on top in votes. Recent Elections Ontario documents show former MPP Helen Johns filed expenses of $89,237 on the election, but lost to Mitchell, who spent con- siderably less at $53,541. The Green Party's Shelley Hannah spent $4,463, while figures for the New Democrat candidate Grant Robertson weren't avail- able. The Freedom Party's Robert Sabharwal filed no expenses. Over in the Perth - Middlesex riding, the los- ing PC candidate Bert Johnson also spent the most money — $78,184, compared to Liberal John Wilkinson, the winner, at $66,590. NDP candidate Jack Verhulst spent $28,008, while Pat Bannon of the Family Coalition spent $4,537. The Green Party's John Cowling had not yet filed expenses, while the Freedom Party's Rob Smink claimed no expens- es. To the south, in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, figures for Liberal MPP Maria Van Bommel had not yet been filed, while former PC MPP Marcel Beaubien filed expenses of $43,104. The NDP's Joyce Jolliffe spent $8,589, Tim Van Bodegom of the Green Party spent $400, and Wayne Forbes of the Freedom Party filed no expenses. Ontario's elections laws state political parties, can- didates and riding associa- tions must file full cam- paign figures. 'Bend bar licences suspended GRAND BEND — Two bars in Grand Bend were handed temporary licence suspensions for violations of Ontario's liquor laws. The Gables Tavern and Coco's both received sus- pensions. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario ordered The Gables not to serve liquor for 12 days starting April 18. The sus- pension comes after the commission heard police arrested an intoxicated person drinking in the bar Aug. 4. The person tried to damage a tavern window after leaving with several other intoxicated people. The commission also heard there were again intoxicated people in the bar Aug. 30. Coco's will not be able to serve liquor for seven days starting June 6. The sus - Middlesex OPP supports World Health Day MIDDLESEX — The World Health Organization des- ignated "Road Safety" as the theme for World Health Day held April 7. Middlesex OPP joined in with police services across the country to promote World Health Day, given its relevant slogan this year: "Road Safety Is No Accident". Middlesex OPP officers focused on roads identified previously by citizens as areas of concern. As well, two OPP Auxiliary Unit officers attended on Richmond Street in the Village of Birr with the Community Policing "Speed Sign" which indicates a driver's speed on a LED screen as they drive by. Officers were sur- prised at the amount of positive attention the sign received in the village.
