Local residents return home safely from Spain
By Debra Toonk
T -A CO-OP STUDENT
EXETER — During a
time when many high
school students were tak-
ing off for March break,
nine local students, two
adult chaperons and one
teacher were on their
way to Madrid, Spain for
a language trip.
However, the date of
departure was March 11,
the day of the Metro
bombings in Madrid, leav-
ing both the travellers
and their families with an
important decision as to
what to do about the trip.
Amanda Clarke, a
Grade 12 student at South
Huron District High
School, was one of the
oldest students participat-
ing in the trip. Even
though the situation in
Madrid was unknown,
she still decided to contin-
ue with the current plans.
"Not going would show
that the terrorists won,"
says Clarke. "And I didn't
want to give them the sat-
isfaction."
Three other students
who were also going on
the trip however, decided
to drop out as there was
too much uncertainty.
The trip was booked
through E.F. Educational
Tours, and when it was
determined that the trip
was still on the partici-
pants were quickly re-
routed away from Madrid
to the town of Telode out-
side the city limits.

LAHA holds
auction
LUCAN — The Lucan
Area Heritage Association
(LAHA) raised $8,000 at
its 6th annual auction
March 27.
Organizer Jackie
Martens said the event
was a big success.
Martens said local busi-
ness merchants have been
supportive of the event as
well as local volunteers
who ran the food booth.
Frank Clark of Ilderton
was the winner of
$232.50 from the 50/50
draw.
LAHA will be holding
Museum Campaign Month
in May to raise money for
the new museum project.

being very solemn, but
local people were still
doing their best to be as
helpful to the tourists as
possible, who were in
return trying to show out-
most respect for the
grieving country.
It would be more than
understandable for the
tourists to question their
safety after such a tragic
event, but Clarke says
that much of the group
was fairly confident when
they were there.
"E.F. Educational Tours
did their best to accom-
modate the situation,"
continues Clarke. "There
was a meeting with all
teachers and chaperons
once we landed to review
the situation and all
changes that have been
made."
The original plans for
the trip regarding Madrid
were to spend a day in
the city on March 12,
which included a trip to
Mai
the city square, the
palace and time spent on
the Metro learning how it
works and how to run it.
Clarke says "it would be
hard to know what would
have happened if the
bombings happened a
day later then they did
since we would have been
in the city, but other stu-
dent groups that were
there on March 11 were
safely evacuated from the
city."
Overall, Clarke feels
that all the participants
still had a good time since
only their one scheduled
day was altered.
"Everyone was there
because they wanted to
be there," adds Clarke.
"That's what kept every-
one upbeat and allowed
us to still have a good
time, and I don't think
anyone who went regret-
ted it."
