Safety of beef
consumption
U.S. consumers remain confident in
the safety of beef despite the discovery
of a single cow with Bovine
Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in
Washington State, according to the
U.S. National Cattlemen's Beef
Association (NCBA).
Awareness among consumers of BSE
was at 96 per cent following the dis-
covery, compared with 61 per cent last
September. Nevertheless, confidence
remained strong, going from 88 per
cent in September to 89 per cent in
surveys conducted Dec. 29 and 30.
The research was conducted by the
research firm IPSOS-Reid. It is statisti-
cally representative of the U.S. adult
population, and has a plus/minus 3.2
per cent margin of error.
Initial indications from Canadian
retailers and food service operators is
that consumption in Canada is also
remaining steady.
