KING PASSES THIS LIFE Ottawa, July 23 — Canada, the Commonwealth and the free world today mourned the death of Xt. Hon, William Lyin Mackenzie King. The former Canadian prime minister died at 9.412' Saturday night at his summer home at Kingsmere, a beautiful re- treat set in the lake -studded 'Gatineau hills, which he loved so Much. Mr. King who was :born at Berlin, Gnt., (now Kitchener) was in his 75th ,year and had been in ill health for a considerable time, but his death was caused by hypostatic pneumonia which, his attended physician said had occurred last Thursday. A great statesman for Canada, hard working and ,always with a sence of humor no matter how ibig the problem, was loved .by all who knew him. From his .Majesty King George, and from Government leaders the world over, messages of sympathy and of salute to the memory of the man who for so many years was leader of Canada's Liberal party and Canada's prime minister, were 'being received at the capital It was a matter of great per- sonal pride to Mr. King that he was prime minister of Canada for 21 of the 30 years he headed the Liberal party. Indeed, on June 21, 1947, when he oonlpleted his 20th ,year in office as prime aninister, the occasion fitt- ingly was recognized. At that time, he had Heid office for a longer period than the head of any other Govern- ment in the world had held similar office. The body rested in state in the Hall of fame in the centre block of the Parliament Buildings, Ottawa till Wednesday until shortly (before the flour of funeral W111.C11 is 3:30 o'chek Wed. afternoon. It was at the little Wellington. Street Church that Mr. King worshipped down through the years, St. Andrews Presbyterian church. The fulleml parby will leave Ottawa by train on Wedncday, ar- riving in Toronto about 10 o'clock. Burial will be in the family blot in Mount Pleasant Cemetery of that city. Columns could br: ;aid and written of this prime ininister of Canaria, who was always so devoted t:o have peace with other nation .tine^ did so much to bring Canada and tll( United Stiites qc) close Lase+t:her. 1'ii the way of life is come and go, enc so we must, like every other c'auntr: give up our great men, and hope fo the future to be able to carry o without them.
