Some unfinished business in the Pacific received attention when,
according to Tokyo, British carrier planes bombed Truk islands,
once -vaunted Jap stronghold. Consisting of many small and heav-
ily fortified islands encircled: almost completely by coral reefs
(small scale map above) Truk would be difficult and costly to attack
by sea. So Allied forces by-passed the island long ago, rendering it
impotent, by seizing surrounding strongholds.

NEEDS NO NOTES
One of the most amazing minds
revealed at the United Nations
Conference in San Franscisco was
that of Lt. Andre Kaminker, of
France. An interpreter, he sat
through all English speeches and,
without making a note, repeated
them 'verbatim without a mistake.
In upper photo he is shown con-
centrating; below, .interpreting.

WINNING, WEATHER. OR NO•
Sticky clay ... water knee deep ... and the pound, pound of Jap
shells. It isn't a pretty picture war paints on Okinawa for these
Marines who wade through knee-deep water following a cloudburst
that sent a stream over its banks, inundating a command post near
Shuri. They're using stretcher to carry office equipment.
WANTED!
Back in 1900 you could have
picked up $125 for turning in
Winston Churchill to any arm
`of the Dutch. law. At that
time "Winnie" was a war cor-
respondent in the Boer War,
and the Boers, as bottom fac-
simile indicates, put that value
on the capture of his head. At
right, the cigar -smoking, non-
chalant Prime Minister of Eng-
land is shown as he appeared
as a scrivener at that time.

MOTOR OF FUTURE
k
Simplicity of jet motors is indicated in this sketch of the P -59-A propellerless fighting plane. Note that
basically the motor consists of a drive shaft, impeller and turbine wheel. Air flows into intake (A), is
compressed by impeller (B), and goes to blast chamber (C), where fuel is ignited and temperature
raised. Turbine (D) is propelled by air pressure and in turn gives power to air compressor at front of
engine. Air flows at high velocity through nozzle (E) creating by reaction the force which drives
plane forward, This plane uses twin turbo -jet engines,
