Devastating Winds.
The powerful and damaging winds
of the recent storm Friday last, did
its toll along Lake Huron; never be-
fore have these residents seen the
waves so large and hungry eatmg up
the banks along the shores with tons
of earth failing into the water only
to be consumed. It was the last of
the old piers at .St. Joseph, erected
around the beginning of the century,
the last cribbing was lifted and car-
ried out of sight down the lake. The
water at this point has eated its way
up nearly to the bank. Erosion of
this kind is beyond the control of
man. Nature just takes its course,
Kitchen On Fire
The quick action of Mr. Jacob
Gingerich saved their home on the
Goshen line south when he was at
the barn and noticed smoke coming
out of the summer kitchen, hurried
to the house and found it filled with
smoke and firer and beyond their con-
trol, rushed to the phone and called
the Zurich Fire Brigade, within a
.short time they were there and bro-
ught the fire under control and sav-
ed the main part of the house which
is partly damaged by smoke. .end
with the splendid help of everyone,
the Gingerich family is very grateful
for the kindness to have their home
saved. Luckily there 'was an ample
supply of water in the tank at the
barn which enabled the fire engine tv
do its -part.

George Henry Beatty, Varna. In-
terment was in Bayfield cemetery.
Mr. Beatty was born in Varna 54
years ago and lived there all his life
where he conducted a farm implem-
ent business. He had been rn ill
,health for the past four years cut
had carried on business until 2
months ago when he was taken to
.Seaforth Hospital where he passed
on. Surviving besides his wife, the

one .son, George, at home and one
