Make Chimneys
Safe — Says
Safety Expert
"An awareness of potential haz-
ards, and the avoiding of accidents
resulting from them, have become
an important part of sound farm
management both in the farm
home and on the farm itself,"
states H. E. Wright, Farm Safety
Specialist with the Ontario Dep-
artment of Agriculture, who esti-
mates that one-quarter of the fat-
al accidents in farm homes are
caused by fire.
"Some of these life and property
losses can't be prevented," says
the safety authority. "Some farm-
ers are too far from neighbours or
fire departments, sometimes water
supplies run short or poor alarm
systems limit control once fires
get started. But we can try to
correct some of the main fire
hazards."
"Take chimneys for instance.
Many people don't realize that
accumulated soot and creosote in-
side chimneys will burn. A hot
fire may cause them to catch
fire and throw sparks out onto
the roof. Thin-walled or cracked
chimneys may let enought heat
through to set fire to the wood of
the buildings."
To prevent these situations,
Wright suggests: "Clean the heavy
deposits of soot and creosote from
inside chimneys at least once a
year. Make chimney walls 4 inches
thick for brick, 8 inches thick for
cement building blocks, and 12
inches thick for chimneys built
of stone."
Other safety suggestions he re-
commends for chimneys are to line
them with clay flue lines, and to be
sure that no wood projects into the
masonry. The chimney should ex-
tend at least 2 feet higher than
the roof ridge.

Went to her cupboard,
Her appetite whetted for sweets.
For good thing galore,
She ran to our store
And got some additional treats.

Geiger.
Sandra McClinchey and Margar-
et Geiger sang, "The Children's
Friend is Jesus." Miss Clara Clark,

Church Sunday School, Bayfield,
sang two numbers, "I will pilot
thee," and 'The nail -scarred hand."
Mrs. Milton Oesch directed the
Choir and was organist for the ser-
vice,
Miss Clark brought an inspiring
message on "Hands." She illus-
trated her message with pictuures
of hands. First was the tightly
clenched hand, depicting the evil
hand. Next was the nail -scarred
hand of Jesus. After that came
the clean hands, followed by pray-
ing hands. The protecting hands
of God were portrayed, and the
hands of judgement, for those who
refuse to accept Christ as Saviour
and Lord.

CHARITY
(Without It)
i am becoming as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal
I am nothing.
It profiteth me nothing.
1 Cor. 13: 1-3
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,
and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or
a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand
all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have all
faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not
charity, 1 am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,
and though I give my body to be burned, and have not
charity, it profiteth me nothing.
