Zurich Institute Mark Education Week,
Pupils Spelling Bee, Talk by Teacher
The Zurich Women's Institute
met in the Town Hall on Tues-
day, March 3, with 14 members
and 16 visitors present.
Mrs. E. Hey was chairman for
the program.
To mark education week, Mrs.
Lavender, principal of Zurich Sch-
ool and 10 of grade 7 and 8 pup-
ils conducted a spelling bee. Those
.taking part were: Bill Dinnin, Car-
ole Fischer, Mary Ellen Thiel, El-
izabeth Johnston, Sandra Parkins,
Peter and Siebren Van Daalen,
Howard Lawrence, Ruth Anne
Flaxbard and Ruth Clausius. The
winner, Carole Fisher, was pres- you and I have a high price to
ented with a pen and pencil set
from the Institute members.
Miss Olive O'Brien gave a very
informative address on Citizen-
ship and Education.
"What is a citizen? One who
owes allegiance and support to
the government and is entitled to
its protection. It includes women,
children, criminals and persons of
all races except alien residents.
There are two classes of citizens,
natural born citizens and natura-
lized citizens."
Our nation is a great nation.

pay through sacrifices, and loyalty
to the highest ideals of our nation
whether we are in the centre of
public attraction or in the quiet-
ness of our home. We should be
ready to carry our end of the
Ioad in any and all situations.
There are three kinds of citiz-
ens:
(1) The "drifters", seem to fol-
low the path of least resistance.
Their lives are aimless and mean-
ingless. They have no set goals
and never arrive at a destination.
They just simply drift. Do we
ever see the names of such in our
histories and in halls of fame? Do
we think of them after they leave
our community?
(2) The "me-firsters" place the
highest value on themselves. Their
own well-being or pleasure is the
chief aim of their lives. Most of
their energies are spent in gett-
ing something for themselves. For
some it is possessions; others pos-
itions and for some others it is
power. This getting and striving
for the top tends to isolate the
person and set him at odds with
his fellowmen. It is a disappointing
way of life for the gains one mak-
es do not satisfy the desire for
further gains.
The "do-gooders" place the val-
ue on other people. For them giv-
ing and sharing with others be-
comes a way of life. They have a
genuine respect for human respon-
sibility and desire to live in peace
and good will with their fellow-
men. This type of life is far sup-
erior to the "Drifters" or the
"Me Firsters", for in placing the
highest value on others these per-
sons find peace and joy in living.
How can we become this worth
while kind of citizen?
(1) By listening: We often ov-
erlook how much we can learn by
just being quiet and listening to
someone who knows more than we
do. Listen to all kinds of lectures.

JO MAKERS
CANADIAN manufacturing in each month of 1958
provided employment for an average of 1,146,156
Canadian men and women. This represented nearly
43 per cent of all non-agricultural employment in
Canada.
The combined income of those engaged in manu-
facturing in 1958 was slightly Tess than $5 billion or
about 31 per cent of all Canadian wages, salaries;
and supplementary labor income.
Manufacturing is by far the most im-
portant part of the Canadian economy.
Manufacturing provides the greatest amount of
employment in Canada. It makes by far the largest
contribution to government revenues. Its production
enables Canadians to enjoy the second highest standard
of living in the world.
Because of its contribution to our way of life,
Canadian manufacturing deserves the support of every
Canadian through the purchase of goods made in
Canada.
Steel is the foundation of all our manufacturing,
and Stelco is Canada's largest steel producer.

jects, there are just uninterested
people".
(2) By speaking: We spend a
large part of each day in talking,
some of it is idle chatter, not
harmful, not stimulating, just a
pleasant pastime. Thinking thr-
ough and presenting a speech to
a group is a good way to brace
up our thinking. This will make
us appreciate other effective sp-
eakers when we hear them".
(3) By viewing: Television has
become a common, everyday pas-
time to -day. Many programs are
merely for entertainment, but
many worth while programs give
us an incentive to become better
citizens.
(4) By reading: Listening, sp-
eaking and viewing all help to
stimulate our thinking, but read-
ing is the most stimulating activ-
ity in which we can engage. By
reading we come into contact with
the best minds of all time.
Poetry touches the emotions.
Good poetry lifts our spirits.
Plays help to resolve that we
will try to be more aware and
sensitive in our daily contacts.
In novels we learn the character
as a real person; understand his
desires and ambitions, his strength
and weaknesses. The character
makes his life good or bad accord-
ing to his choices,
(5) By doing: The fly takes in
great amounts of God's free air
and by quickly expelling it, has
tremendous power to go places.
