REMINISCING
AS WE NEAR the end of another year we think back of
what has been accomplished in the past year, and think of the
things we would like to see done in the coming year.
Perhaps one of the biggest projects locally during the past
year was the starting of the community park to the east of the
arena. The land has been purchased, and a considerable amount
of filling has been done. The work was rushed in the late fall
so the grounds could be ready to use for the Fall Fair.
We would like to see further development on this project
during the coming year. It would be very nice to see more of
the space filled in, and a start made on the children's play-
ground area.

THIS PAST YEAR has seen considerable discussion and
some work done in connection with a parking area and a suitable
approach to the beach at St. Joseph. Hay Township council has
gone so far as to have the roadway surveyed and stakes are now
in the ground marking the public area.
We feel sure that in the next year the council will finish,.
this job, and we will have an ideal place where we can get to
the beach and also to park cars.

A BIG CONTROVERSY has developed this past year over
the moving of the township office. There has been bickering
about the location of a new office, and even some discussion as
to the advisability of turning the Township Hall into municipal
offices. This latter idea met with a storm of disapproval from
the local Chamber of Commerce, as well as other organizations.
We feel quite certain that in the year ahead the capable
council which has been returned to office will see fit to erect a
new building, and probably on a site which will be suitable to all.
THIS YEAR has been a banner one for both the Chamber
of Commerce and the Lions Club. Both organizations have
actively carried out any projects which they have started.
To both of these groups we say, "Carry on the good work
in 1959."

MANY IMPROVEMENTS have taken place in the Village
of Zurich in the past year. Last winter the council inaugurated
snow removal on the main streets, which has been a tremendous
help to the parking situation. The village has hired a full-time
maintenance man. A new hydro line was built in the main
section of town. And now, near the end of the year, flat rate
water heaters have been passed.
There is still one big project ahead for the village in the
next year and that is incorporation. We would like to see Zurich
incorporated as a village, and in the next couple of months we
plan on presenting to the public the pros and cons of being
incorporated.

THE ZURICH FALL FAIR is well on its way to becoming
one of the better fairs in Huron County after the successful year
they have just had. Despite speculation to the contrary the fair
did end up above board, even though there was an increased amount
of prize money given away.
We are sure that with more help, better co-operation and a
larger number of exhibitors in 1959 the fair will continue to
grow as it did this past year.

ALL THE CHURCHES in the community report better at-
tendances this . year than in the past.
We hope for continued growth in every church in 'the dist-
rich, urging all Christians to keep in mind the saying:"THE
FAMILY THAT PRAYS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER".

SEVERAL CAMPAIGNS have met with terrific success
during the year of 1958. The Easter Seals Campaign for the
Ontario Society for Crippled Children had the highest returns
in its history here in Zurich. The campaign for the Canadian
National Institute for the Blind reached and went over its
quota for the first time.
This definitely shows us that people are becoming more
generous to the less fortunate, and we hope they will continue
to do so.

IN THE WORLD OF SPORTS this district enjoyed one
of the best years ever. Starting with last winter the Zurich
Flyers won the WOAA Intermediate C Homebrew title. The
Midget hockey team won the WOAA title and advanced to
the finals in the OMHA. This past summer the Zurich Lumber -
kings won the .All Ontario Intermediate C Baseball. title.
'1'o all these sporting groups we wish the best of luck in
'59, and urge all true sportsmen., to, keep in mind this saying,
as posted in the Goderich Memorial Arena:
"When the one great scorer
Comes to write your name,
It's not of what you won or lost,
But how you played the game."

IN GENERAL the picture today looks much brighter than
it did one year ago. If we all strive to work together in the
years ahead 'we will make this coxnmianity of ours a much better
place to live in.
In closing out this year, we would like to take'' the oppor-
tunity of wishing one and all. THE' MOST PROSPEROUS
AND HAPPIEST NEW YEAR EVER.
