Local Fisherman
Cutting Ice Early
Stan Smith, a local fisherman,
packed his ice on the 18th and
19th of December this year, the
•earliest he has ever done °this
job since starting in 1036.
On an average the ice was
nine inches thick. He cut it on
the pond of Kenneth Gascho, as
the high winds along the lake
have made the ice in rivers and
ponds along there very dirty with
sand and ground.
Ice fishing on the lake has not
yet started. There is consider-
able ice on the lake, and a north-
west blow would jam it together
before the nets could be sgt.
In other business the board de-
cided to hire Norman Fleischauer
to make necessary repairs to shel-
ving above the radiators so more
heat could come out through
them. .
William Thiel, caretaker of the
Zurich school, appeared before
the board with a request for an
increase in salary, but it was
decided not to give him tin in-
crease.
It was pointed out to the trus-
tees that the pressure •boiler at
the Zurich school would have to
be inspected, and they decided
to have this done. Gerald Ginge-
rich was instructed to clean the
oil stove at No. 8 school.

Comments
Following an old French tradi-
tion New Year's day is always
celebrated as a feast in this Par-
ish. On that day there are hand- '
shakes, the symbol of love and
firendship.
Weeks before the homes are
prepared for the occasion, espec-
ially by parents who are going to • .
welcome their children, friends,
and neighbours.
In the early years of this settle- -
merit when there were no autos
to transport people they depended
on the one-horse drawn "Barlo;",
which was a long sleigh witha
deep box. The children were bun-
dled up and placed in the Barlo,
where sometimes they would have'
to travel eight or ten miles before
reaching their destination. Along
the way in the early hours, wolves
and other wild animals would
cross their path. The cracking of
trees from the bitter cold could
be heard, and once in a while you
could hear the snort of the steed
when going over a deep pitch hole.
Others who lived within a mile
or so of the parental home did not
bother with horses for the trip.
If there were children in the fam-
ily the mother would bundle the
youngest one up and carry it the
entire dista.nce, ,The father would
horseback the mext youngest ones,
and the older children would fol-
low the parents along the trail,
