The biggest complaint came from councillor John Hen- derson, who voiced all his beefs to the nomination meeting. He said there were too many things done in Hensall that the council did not even know about. "Firms from outside Hensall are bringing their products into the village and selling them without a licence," charged Mr. Henderson. He also stated that he was not satisfied with the work that was being done by the clerk. John Lavender told the gather- ing that although it was not worth while being a council member he would run again because he enjoy- ed the work. He pointed out how over the period of a year a coun- cil member was only earning $1.13 per hour for the work he was do- ing for the village. Veteran councillor Lorne Luker, although nominated, said he was retiring from municipal office. Another man who was nominated, Charles Fiford, also declined to accept the challenge. All the other new nominees spoke briefly, thanking their mov- er and seconder, and stated they Would put all their efforts into the office if they were elected. A third candidate who was nom • 'noted for reeve was George Arm- strong, a man who has had con- siderable experience in municipal life, being a former reeve of Hay Township. However, Mr. Arm- strnog found it necessary to with- draw his name, due to his position as assessor of Hay Township. In addressing the group Mr. Arm- strong said he was not pleased with the way the PUC had gone ahead and erected the new build- ing in Hensall without calling for tenders or letting contracts out for the work. He also criticized the work of the County Council for the way they spend money fool ishly. Several other ratepayers were also critical of the way the PUC had erected their new building without calling for tenders. The other candidate who qual. ified was Lorne Hay, who also spoke briefly. He stated he could the council has done during th. past years. Mr. Hay also sug. gested that a more detailed state.. ment of the operators of the village during a year should be published, so the ratepayers would know what has gone on during the course of a year's business. Robert Reaburn, principal ot the public school in Hensall' and secretary of the school board gave the financial statement of the board for the, past year, which showed a balance on hand of $728.05. The meeting, which was held in the council chambers was well at- tended by an interested group of ratepayers. The election for the village council and reeve will be held on Monday, December 1. • 0 abies?
