Citizenship Extended To Seventeen
New Canadians; !ODE Gives Party
,Seventeen New Canadians re-
ceived their citizenship 'yelpers in
an limprestsirvett ceremony at the
Court House in Gaderioh an Oct-
ober 7.
Addressinlg the New Canadians
Judge palark, Guelph, pointed out
that getting citizenship meant
more than just getting a .piece
of !paper„ He stated it meant for
them a freedom: to worship, free
speech, the might to vote Iln secret,
the right to have a fair trial if
charged with any offence..
In return, they were. to be loyal
to their adepted country far it
meant much to their welfare. They
must have respect for the laws
and become familiar with. govern-
ment from the municipal level up.
They were to take: an active inter-
est in their country and exercise
their right to vote.
Judge iOlarlk noted that the ma-
joetty of the New Canadians were
from Holland and they might halve
a tendency to speak Dutch in Can-
ada because of the large Dutch
settlement in Huron. County. He
advised thein that to make friends
and be friends of English-speaking
people:, the New Canadians from
i-pittand should speak English. on
the streets and in Ruble pfacets.
Not to do so creates a certain
amount df suspicion among Can-
adians
anadians who &eft understand your
language, he said.
Then, Judge Clark said that
Canadlipanls have .a duty to the
New 'Canadians and that Canad-
ians are grateful ;For the talents
which are brought to this country
from Europe.
