Choose Grain Variety ' ith Care—
Much Depends on Local Conditions
The choice of a crap variety is
one of the most important deci-
sions a farmer must make, says
G. H. Clark of Harrow Experi-
mental Farm.
The variety selected may mean
the difference between success and
failure of the crop.
Among points to consider in
choosing •a winter wheat variety
are maturity, yield, lodging resi-
stance, disease and insect resist-
ance, quality and ability to flour -

In winter wheat as in mast
crops, high acre yield and net pro -
flit go hand in hand and high qual-
ity seed of recommended variety
is a must.
The most highly recommended
winter wheat for most of Ontario
is Genesee, which is resistant to
shabten'.ng and gives a soft -white
wheat of good test weight and
good milling quality. It is fairly
resistant to loose smut but is sus-
ceptible to bunt and leaf rust.
Genesee is the best variety for
most of Ontario but its white,
medium ball straw is not as stiff
as Cornell 595.
Richmond, which was first dis-
tributed in 1955, is the most winter
hardy of quality wheats but is
somewhat weaker than Genesee
in straw strength and i:s suscept-
ible t.o loose smut and leaf rust.
Under some conditions it will
equal or exceed Genesee in yield.
Cornell 595 is a soft winter
wheat with red chaff, white grain
and straw which becomes purplish
just ,prior to maturity, It is fair-
ly resistant to loose smut but sus-
ceptible to bunt, leaf and stem
rust and shattering.
Dawbui is a variety with red
chaff and white grain with some

resistance to loose smut and white,
fairly strong medium tall straw.
A new red -seeded feed wheat
expected to become popular is
called Kent. It outyielded all oth-
er red wheats lin performance trials
in Western Ontario and yielded
only two bushels per acre less
than Genesee in most areas. It
has good straw length, resistance
to loose smut and leaf rust and
has about two, percent more pro-
tein than Genesee.
Rideau variety has white chaff
and a white gran suitable for feed
but not acceptable to the milling
trade. It is the most winer-hardy
type available in Ontario at the
present time and is recommended
for areas whore this characteristic
is most required.
