Fall Hunting Prospects Encouraging
Banner Year Ahead for Pheasants
Wildlife Biologist Lloyd Stock,
back from a pheasant survey of
Pelee Island for the Ontario Dep-
artment of Lands and Forests,
says fa11 hunting prospects are
encouraging.
"Reports from across the a'ne
tire district indicate that this is
a banner year far ,pheasants," he
says. "The hatch. and survival
up to the end of July have been a-
bove average, and birds have been
seen in areas where they have
been absent for the past few years:
"If the mortality rate hen -rains
ains
normal for the balance of the
growing season, !birds will be rela-
tively plentiful and the hunter will
have a good chance •ef filling his
bag this fall.
"On Pelee Island, the July sur-
vey just; completed revealed that
the pheasants there have increased
substantially in numbers; the av-
erage brood size at present is 7.5
checks.
"The season on Pelee has been
set for Wednesday and Thursday,
October 29 and 30. The bag limit
—nine cocks and two hens.
"The season thus far on Pelee
has been as good it not better
than on the anainil:and. The water
supply on the island has not been
a limiting tactor which may have
been the case elsewhere in south-
western Ontario during the un-

"Barring unforseen circumstanc-

hunt on Pelee. There will be more
than enough cocks for all hunters
and the hens, of course, will be ab-
undant. The Tatter are being shot
to keep the pop'utl'ation at the nor-
mal carrying capacity of the is-
land. Hunters are urged to as-
sist in this management program
by limiting their shooting to two
