Livestock Losses
From Rabies Low,
Despite Outbreaks
While outbreaks of rabies have
persisted in Ontario, this summer,
loss of livestock has mot been as
great as some reports would in-
dicate, the 1 -knowable Douglas S.
Harkness, Minister of Agriculture
said today.
All suspected cases of rabies
tame referred to the Department's
animal pathology laboratory tor
confdruna:tion. In the past fiscal
year, ending March 31, rabies in
a .of Canada ,ciailrned 101 cattle,
10 horses, 14 sheep, four swine
and otne goat. In the first quarter
sof this fiscal year, the disease
was cWfirmed in 77 cattle, three
hones, 20 sheep and four swine
throughout the country.

The confirmed cases of rabies
continue 1:a be predominantly in
wildlife — particularly in foxes.
These constitute 68 per cent of
all eases ?In the last fiscal year,
and the percentage is munnni,ng the
same so far this year.
The current outbreak of rabies
in Ontario is the result of the nat-
ural spread sof the disease in Wild,
life frcxm the Northern Territories,
where it was prevalent a few years
ago but where at has now virtual -
:by disappeared.
While there is a continuing dan-
ger of domestic animals contacting
rabies from infected wildlife', the
main threat both, to domestic ani-
mals and to humans would be if
•ra'bies became established in dogs.
The department's major eWFfort in
dealling with rabies has been in
conducting widespread dog vaccin-
,ation clinics in the infected areas.
Clinics are still being held in
central and eastern Ontario.
This program has been success-
ful so far in preventing rabies in
dogs thus reducing the hazard to
humans. In the current outbreak,
there have been no cases of hu-
man infection.
