WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1958 What's Happened to the Proposed Park LAST SPRING a public meeting was held in Zurich, at which time it was unanimously decided to spend the money left from the centennial in a community park to the east of the arena. We under- stood at that time the work would start very shortly in the preparing of the ground for such a purpose. Options were then placed on the land that it was felt necessary 3o have. The township council was asked if they would accept the grounds in the name of Hay Township, so the necessary government grants would be available. They agreed to do so, and everything was ready to proceed. NOW, however, months later, we find nothing more has been done about the development of this park. The land has still not been draw uptheird and by-law be aid useafor'they have not asnor hs the yet received ved the been !e to deed for the land. On behalf of the many inquiries directed at us in this regard, we are asking what the delay is and who is to blame for the hold-up. First thing we know it will be fall fair time and the land still won't be purchased, let alone be in condition to hold the fair on. Let's have some action on this project and get the thing started. Parking Problem RECENTLY WE have had different people tell us it is very hard to find a parking space on the main streets of our village, especially on Friday and Saturday. No doubt we are all to blame for this situation. Without thinking we all park our cars or trucks on the main street, taking up valuable space which could be left for people coming hi from out of town. This is not very encouraging to these people who are coming in from outside the district to shop here. Perhaps if we all bear this in mind and make an effort to either park behind the stores or on streets around the corner the situation will be much better. Let's try and make Zurich a more pleasant place for people to come and do business in. "We have suffered too Tong un- der the Act. Enforcement of 'the provisions of the Act has 4become virtually impossible." We quote from a 'brief recently presented to our Huron County Council by two private citizens. They.demanded that through the County Council ,our County be placed on record as protesting the Canada Temperance Act. Who have suffered? Not abstain- ers, naturally. Not law-abiding moderate .drinkers. They can le- gally have liquor brought into their homes by •coramon carrier. Not most of OUT aiowiy families. Our County record of broken homes, unmarried mothers, and destitution in general, is far be- low that of legal -liquor -outlet counties. Wino have suffered? Legal liquor vemklars, for we have no legal li- quor outlets tin Huron. Bootleggers. Yes, our Act has teeth. One ho- tel keeper has had three convic- tions for "keeping for sale", and has .two other charges pending. One bottle club proprietor not bong since spent four months in jail. Our Crown Attorney in Huron takes action without fear or fa- vour when infractions of the law are reported to him, We com- mend our County Council for its action in 'defeating this move. Huron County Temperance Federation and the children with fountain penis, sand pails, and shovels, Mrs, Alex McBeath read the presenta- tion address and Howard Lemon, Karen Talbot, Margaret Jean Me - Kenzie, and.Shirley McKenzie, made the presentations.
