our thoughts should turn to the
Royal Family and our own great
Dominion. Here are some facts
which may be new to you.

Iroquois word "Kanata" meant a
"collection of huts" and early ex-
plorers mistook this for the name
of the country. Another possible
Indian derivation is from "Kan",
for mouth and "ada" for river,
the country at the mouth of the
St. Lawrence River.

1917, by r o y al proclamation,

Elizabeth . . . The Queen

The Queen Mother, in the legal
interpretation of the word was a
commoner, before her marriage.

Royal Allowances
The moneys for the Civil List
of the Sovereign and the allow-
ance to the members of the Royal
family do not come out of the
pocket of the tax payers of Great
Britain or the Commonwealths.
When Queen Victoria came to the
throne in 1837, an arrangement
was made whereby she surrender-
ed to the state for the term of
her life and reign, all the revenues
of the Crown property, which
were hers by inheritance in re-
turn for an allowance from what
is known as the Consolidated
Fund. The allowance was fixed
at $2,500,000 and any balance of
the income derived from the
Crown property was to be turned
into the national exchequer. At
the beginning of a new reign it
is the practice ofthe House of
Commons to appoint a select com-
mittee to make recommendations
for the civil list and the annuities
to the Royal Family. From 1837
to 1921 it was calculated that
the State had benefitted financial-
ly to the extent of at least $35,-
000,000 since entering into such
arrangements.

erous offenders to the regulation,
but none have been prosecuted,
and council feels they should be..
Much discussion took place at
this meeting in regards to buying
land in the north west and south
west corners of town, so that
several new streets could be open-
ed for future development areas.
