"There are three distinct groups
in regard to this problem. The
first group claims that the only
Christian attitude is that of total
assitinence. The second group
want no part of it and will leave
it alone. The third group believ-
es in the moderate use of bever7
age alcohol. Alcohol has been a
curse to many people.
The Scott Act was 'passed in
1876. Senator Scott was the man
who sponsored this act. This is
also known as The Canaadian
Temperance Act. There has al-
ways been a tug of war between
the Dominion and Provincial auth-
orities. The Provinces looked up-
on this law as an infringement of
Provincial rights, In 1893 this
law was repealed. Liquor license
laws the name in force. It al-
ways has been a problem to en-
force
nforce these laws.
The Christian religion outlawed
slavery, and we hope that liquor
will also be outlawed, In 1905,
the first Local Option was voted.
In 1913, 14 more came in under
Local Option. From 1914 until.
1920, the G.T.A. was again in
force, and it worked well. The;
Ontario Temperance Act was al-;
so accepted. In 1934; the bever-
age rooms carne in, but they were
removed in 1945. The G.T.A. was
the sole regulation, concerning
liquor in Huron County. In
July, five men went to Ottawa
and received a good reception
from the Minister of Justice, Dav-
id Fulton."
E. E. Wuerth thanked the
speaker and all men stood to
show their appreciation. Leroy
O'Brien and Milton Oesch sang
the duet, "It pays to serve Jesus
each day."
The Rev. A. M. Amacher, took
charge of the business meeting.
He read a letter of resignation
fro mthe teacher of the class, W.
H. Edighoffer, but the resignation
was not accepted. Mr. Edighof-
fer has been teacher of the class
for 40 years. Menno Steckle read
an address of appreciation and
Jahn Gascho presented Mr. Edig<
troffer, with a gift, a sweater,
from.. the class Mr. Edinghoffer
expressed his gratitude to all the
men, and said that he had re-
ceived a wonderful blessing from
teaching all these years. Some
former members of the class are
occupying prominent places in
churches in Kitchener and tSrat-
ford as well as these who are
faithfully serving in the local
church.
