A goodly number villagers attend -I
ed the fowl supper sponsored by the
United church at Varna, rast Thurs-
day evening, and they got well paid
for going. A real good supper and
a most splendid program. Varna
had the largest crowd they have ex-
perienced.
This has been a great year for
potatoes and some monster spuds are
reported. So fax Goderich.township
is ahead with one so big, so the re-
port goes, that it had to becut in,
seven pieces -or was it eleven? -to
be put in the pot for cooking.-God-
erich Signal.

More Robberies
Sometime Tuesday night the Exet-
er station was, broken into as was
also Wein's garage at Dashwood.
Both places were entered by the
breaking of a pane of glass and both
places a small amount of loose change
was stolen. As far as can be learned
nothing else was taken.
Ernest C. Drury, former Premier
of Ontario, has been appointed
sheriff, local registrar of the Supr-
eme Court and clerk of the County
Court of the county of Simcoe. He
takes the place of two officials, evi-
dently
vidently under the new Provincial
Government"s plan of amalgamat-
ing offices wherever it is possible.
Old Jack Frost made his appear-
ance on Saturday and Sunday morn-
ing, and practically all the tender
vines and delicate flowers have been
"cooked" as the saying goes. There
was also ice on the standing water,
but the weather has been exception-
ally fine and warm for this time of
year since, and a few more weeks of
this balmy weather will shorten the
fall and winter months.

REMEMBRANCE DAY -
Remembrance Day falling this year
on Sunday . (November 11) will be
celebrated on that day so far as the
Department of Secretary of State is
concerned. In the- case of statutory
holidays falling on Sunday the pro-
vision. is - made that the following
Monday will be observed for business
purposes. :Remembrance Day does
not. fall; :into that category. Celebrat-
ion of the armistice ending the Great
War is the feature of Remembrance
Day,:„and'tlie incident of its falling
on Sunday 'does not detract but
rather adds, in the opinion of State
Department officials, to the fitness of
the day for such observance, Any
departure from. the provisions in or-
der to provide a business holiday on
the following Monday will be a mat-
ter for local ruling.
The other day we were greeted at
the post office with our annual tax
notice, which seems to come along
about this time each year. In com-
paring it with last year's notice we
notice that it is a few dollars higher
than the past year, this is due to
Nigher rates in the following items:
County rate, Zurich Pol. Village rate
and. the Special school rate is nearly
double to hist year. However, we
must bear it with a smile and see
how we get it paid.
No Cases At Huron Assizes
There were no cases listed for hear
ing when the autumn session of co -
minty court opened Tuesday of last
week at Goderich before Judge T.M.
Costello. Two applicants presecuted
themselves for naturaliziaton, which
was granted. They were John Neil-
son, baker of Seaforth, who came to
this country from Denmark, and
John Kun, deh of Exeter, a native of
tustria. :Cloth answered questions
:post intelligently and were given
kindly words of instructions on the
duties of citizenship by his honor.

tal production of commercial apples

estimate of 1932. The 1933 estim-
ates are 5,329,800 barrels, valued at

Eradicating Perennial Weeds
The roots of perennial weeds such
as Canada thistle and field bindweed
often penetrate the ground to depths
of four or five feet, The roots of,
these weeds can send up new shoots
when they are cut o$ to depths of 18
inches. Deep ploughing, therefore
will not eradicate perennial weeds of
this type. One method of eradicating
deep rooted perennials weeds is to
keep down the top growth by frequ-
ent cultivation and exhaust the food
stored in the roots. Another is to
apply a 10 per cent solution of sod-
ium chlorate at the rate of one gal-
lon per square rod.
Cleaning the Hen house
At this time of year hen houses
should be thoroughly cleaned, disin-
fected, and whitewashed. At ,the Po-
ultry .Division, Central Experimental
Farm the following whitewash mix-
ture has been used with satisfaction.
Slake bushel of lime with boiling
water, strain and add 1 peck of salt,
dissolve in warns. water. Put 8 poun.&&
of ground rice in boiling water and
boil to a thin paste. Dissolve
of powdered Spanish whiting and 1
pound of clear glue in warm water.
Mix all these well together and let
stand: for seyeral days. Keep over s
portable furnace .and apply .hot wit}
brushes.
