There is nothing more cruel than
politics. Some fine men, in every
way deserving were beaten at the
polls in the general elections without
having any reason to expect that
they would be beaten. They seem-
ed to have as many friends as they
ever had. They were cheered at
every appearance as they always had
been. The reports from their work-
ers were never more assuring. Yet
they went under. The cabinet min-
isters who retained their own seats
were more responsible for the utter
defeat of the government than were
the cabinet ministers who met with
defeat in their own ridings.

How it Looks to Wiarton
(From The Wiarton Echo)
Goderich Signal—Goderich Board
of Trade business men were -com-
plaining last week that the ;air town
-o.f Goderich was not getting its share
of tourist trade because it had neith-
er liquor store, beer warehouse nor
licensed beverage rooms. They said
that the tourists only stopped long
enough to a9k where was Port Elgin
or Wiarton, both "Wet" towns and
both "Chuck full of tourists." G. L.
Parsons said, "'All we have to offer
is the autmosphere, environment,
scenery and sunsets and that isn't
enough." We would say to Goderich
—don't kid yourself that air the tour
ist wants is beer. The complaint we
hear around our streets is that call
the tourists are wanting to know how
far it is to Tobermory. Tourists are
not all of the thirsty type—in fact
it would appear that the locals are
the patrons of the beverage rooms
even more than the tourists. For the
most part American tourists come
from States where beer is served in
resturants, so that with the repeal of
the 14th amendment the lure of Can-
ada as a thirst quencher is not ,o
strong as it was. When the liquor
store was first talked of as coming to
town, some of the merchants voted
for it, thinking it would brine. h,,s-
iness to Wiarton. We have heard
some of these same men discuss it
since and state that they were mis-
taken Liquor store patrons who
come 'here for liquor rarely visit the
other stores to purchase drygoods,
boots and shoes or groceries. They
come -for the specific purpose of pur-
ehasimg liquor. If they run short of
gas they. may fill up enough to take
them ,home„ but otherwise all they.
do 'is wear out our roads. We cannot
agree with the Goderich financiers
that the . sale of liquor in their town
would induce tourists to settle down
fart 'Goderich or make their sunsets
and scenery any more difficult to
leave. In fact, the after effects of the
liquor purchased would probably
-present the scenery in a more lurid
