Saving Taxpayers' Money
County ' Crown Attorney D.
E.
Holmes, in commenting upon the
rather' remarkable fact that this
week, foe the seventh time in two
years, a jury has been dispensed"with.
at sittings of the High and County
Courts in this county, pointed out
that this means a substantial saving
to the ratepayers of the county.. Al-
though several cases were down on
the County Court docket for, this
last week to beetried by jury, ar-
rangements were made with counsel:
to have these tried by the judge, and
in this one instance a saving to the
county of about $750 was effected.
Mr. Holmes believes that In the last
two years the saving to the county in
this way has easily been from *4,000'
to $5,000.

William Hartman, farmer, resid-
ing on the Goshen line'iin Stephen
Township, about four miles south of
the Lake Road, narrowly escaped.
death in a peculiar accident at his
farm. A threshing machine owned by
E. G. Kraft was being hauled into
the barn by a lively team of horses
when a line snapped, causing the,
horses to swerve and the large ma-
chine toppled over the side of the
bank, falling on its side. Mr. Hart-
man was pinned underneath, with, on-
ly his legs visible, and at first it was
feared that he was dead, but after
shovelling away the snow. he was
able to crawl out from under the
machine. He owes his life to the.
fact that he fell into deep snow,
wich prevented the heavyweight
from crushing him. Dr. R. H. Tay-
lor, who examined him, found thathe
had suffered four fractured ribs.
