When darkness shortly came on with a chilling wind, he bivouacked for the night, kindled a fire for warmth and comfort, and grilled the partridge they had shot. The part ridge he divided with care, giving the breast meat to the youngest boy. Then, in preparation for daylight, hila took direction from the North Star and set a stick pointing in the direc- tion that should bring them out on the railroad. Early in the morning' they set off, and finally came out on the rails four miles from hone.
