LIFE, DEATH AND
TUBERCULOSIS
Scores of thousands of people have
died of tuberculosis in Ontario during
the last thirty-five years, most of whom
might have been saved if treated in
time. In a little ever three decades the
deaths from tuberculosis in Ontario
have been reduced from about 160 for
each 100,000 living persons to 37 at
the present time. lu fact, your chances
and mine of dying of tuberculosis aro
less than ono -third of what they were at
the turn of 1.ho present .century. More
than 4.400 men, women and children
will celebrate Christmas with, you and
me this year who would have died of
tuberculosis in 1936 if this disease were
killing to -day at the same rate as in
1900, when the work of the National
Sanitarium Association was just nicely
getting under way.
lint in spite of all that has been done
and in sotto ' of thq continued decline in
deaths Trona tuberculosis, it is sad to
note that 1,303 people died of this
disease in Ontario last year. It is doubly
sad to learn too that there are about
6,600 active rives of tuberculosis in
this Province right new. And what is
more to the point, more than half of the
people who died of tuberculosis last year
and of those who are now sick, are young
people in the prime, productive ages of
lite, between fifteen and forty -levo.
Sixty cut of every one hundred deaths
from tuberculosis occur in these ages.
Early youth, the years between fifteen
and twenty -i ve, is an especially 'danger -
obs time for the development of tubercu-
losis. It is at this time, when young
people pl'e• are in 'ugh school, college or just
into industry, that tuberculosis
takes its greatest toll. Because it IS
not discovered and treated in time, the
disease- gots a foothold and becomes fatal

SAVES COPPERS TO BUY
LICENSE
Exeter, Nov. 16—On January 1.3,
pf this year, the last day of grace
'o.r the purchase of 1936 motor lic-
enses, the issuer of motor Licenses
'or Exeter was startled, when upon
asking a customer for his license fees
to have a large canvas bag contain -
'ng 800 coppers emptied unceremon-
ously on his desk with the remark
'porn the customer, "I think you will
end them all there." 'Again today
his customer presented, as payment
'or his 1937 license, .a bag full of
uppers, but fortunately has chosen
time when the issuer had more
im to count them. "I find it no
rouble to pay for my license each
rear as I just keep tossing the cop -
sees I get in change into this bag and
tit the end of the year there le always
;hough," remarked the customer.---
NaturalIy enough the name of this
:ustomer has not till recently been
evealed, and the party with this
pique inspiration, happens to be Mr
Milton McAdams, of the Bronson
