the Exeter Times -Advocate has been
appointed as returning officer for the
corning Provincial election.
Monday of this week was July
12th, Orange Walk Day, or perhaps
better known as the 12th of Ire-
land. This year the celebration was
held at Wingham.
We are now in the midst of the
holiday season and local summer re-
sorts report very good business, as
most people enjoy a bit of relaxation
at some time or other.
Good growth has been prevalent
the past few weeks, and it is surpris-
ing how things are coming along.
Farmers are busy with their haying
and the wheat looks lovely with its
-golden yellow, and will also be" ready
for the sickel before many moons.
Some real nice fields of summer
grain are to be noticed as one driv-
es along, and the pessimist who pre-
dicted that there will not be any
harvest this year, well, he cannot be
found just for a while -

LAKE IS COLD
Bathers in Lake Huron this sum-
mer are finding the water chillier
than last year at this time. No one
seems to know why, but figures don't
lie. The other day the water at a
certain .point the temperature was
66 degrees, as compared with 75 de-
grees a year ago. All along theline
bathers complain of colder .nater.
PENICILLIN, NEW WONDER
DRUG FROM MOLD
Is Recovering Nicely
The many friends of Miss Kathleen
Hess are very happy to hear that she
was able to return to her hone, Mr.
and Mre. Albert Hess on Saturday,
after being admitted to St. Joseph's
Hospital, London for some days be-
ing treated for an infection sae re -
received through insect bite. Kath-
leen looks very cheerful and takes a
keen interest. of looking over the be-
autiful letters, cards, flowers and
other treats which she received from
friends both children and adults.
Were Out Fishing
Messrs. Theo. and Ferd. Haberer,
Hy. Eickmcier, and Gid. Koehler en-
joyed a fishing trip to Meaford over
the week -end. The trout fishing is.
very scarce at this time of the year,
but they were successful in landing
a nice big one, weighing ten pounds.
And if this fish were sold at the price
your publisher was obliged to pay
up the lake for trout, 53c. a pound,
then these fishermen did not snake
the trip in vain, and they have had
the • splendid outing. Buying fish on
the market up the lake is something
to be remembered when lake trout
sell for 53e. a ib. and white fish at
45c., -well, the price ceiling com-
mitte surely must be a long way off.

FARM WAGES RISE
The Doninion Bureau of :Statistics
reports that the sate of wages paid
to farm help at Bay 194.3 increased
sharply as compared with the same
date of 1941 and '42. The increase,
the bureau said, occurred in all pro-
vinces, and for the country as a
whole the average rate of wages paid
to farm laborers where the farmer
provided the board was $2.30 per
day, as• compared with $1.91 a year
previous.

Mr. George Armstrong, the popular
Reeve of Hay Township and warden
of Huron County in 1942, will likely
let his name go before nomination as
Progressive - Conservative candidate
for .Huron at the party convention at
Hensall on Thursday this week, it
was stated from Goderich. Mr. Arm-
strong was quoted as "seriously en-
tertaining the thought." The only
other contender for the candidacy
it seems is Dr. Hobbs Taylor of
Dashwood.
. TEACHER SHORTAGE
Goderich - Over half the rural
public school teachers of Huron Co-
unty have resigned most of them to
take teaching positions in towns and
cities, Inspector J. H. Kinkead said.
There is small chance of replacing
them all he said, forecasting that
some schools might not have a tea-
cher next September. Salaries now
range from $1,000 to X11;400 an in-
crease of 25. per cent. One school
section which advertised for a teach•
er over two weeks ago has received
only one application.

AGED MAN BADLY BURNED
80 -year old Peter Defore, bis clot-
