Tales. of Glooskap
By ROXANNE LAVERY
GRADE 8, HENSALL P.S.
Glooskap and all his relatives
were seated around a big open
fire. He was about to tell the
legend of his great adventure
with a grizzly bear. He was out
catching racoons at the time.
He had noticed very large tracks
in the snow. He decided to follow
them.
They led him to a broken clown
teepee. It was all tattered and
was in the process of decomp-
osing. The poles were broken
and the canvas flap was right off.
He looked inside and as he
stuck his foot in he felt something
very heavy standing on it. He
didn't stop to see what it was.
When he reached a spot in
the woods where he was safe,
he looked down at his moccasin.
There were four holes in it,
,just by coincidence, there were
two on each side. He pulled his
knife out and took off hack to
the tent to try and catch what
ever it was but he couldn't find
a trace of it.
He now had to go back to the
tent and cut some of the canvas
into strips to put through the
holes to keep his moccasin closed
tightly. This is how shoelaces
came to Canada.
Rainbow formed

GRADE 8. HENSALL P.S.
Glooskap was painting his
teepee one day because the sun
was warns and bright which would
help the paint to dry easier and
faster. He began painting
and painting until the sun was
getting too hot for him to stand.
He threw in the towel and went
in the teepee for a rest, While
Glooskap was resting, some
mischievous birds started play-
ing with the paint and dipping
their tails in the paint and slap-
ping it on the teepee.
The birds had just dipped their
tails in the paint of all colours.
When Glooskap was awakened
by the slapping and banging on
the teepee, he came out and to
his dismay the teepee was a
mess with different colours
slapped on it.
The birds took off in fright.
Leaving the colours in streams
across the sky, Glooskap saw
tliis string of colours and named
it a rainbow.
HOW SAP BECAME SYRUP
By MICHELLE TRIEBNER
GRADE 8, HENSALL P.S.
It all started when Moonwind,
Glooscap's wife, was winterizing
their dugout canoe with sap
since it was now the winter
season. She put it above her
log fire. While waiting for it to
turn into a liquidy formula,
she went about attending her
other duties.
Time went faster than she
realized. Moonwind completely
forgot about stirring the sap.
Her little papoose was crying
softly. Since he was at the age
of walking she let him stretch
his chubby bronze legs.
"Moonwind! Moonwind,
where is your little papoose?"
the gentle breezes called softly.
Moonwind looked around in
amazement. He was gone, her
little son was gone. She arose
quickly and in doing so she called
Glooscap for help.
After a short search they found
him. It had been slightly windy
that day and it was just enough
of a gust that it knocked the
dugout canoe over. The sap went
with it.
There they found their little son
covered form head to toe with the
liquidy substance and eating
contentedly. What could he be
eating they wondered. It wasn't
snow they knew because it wasn't
white.
When they looked more closely
they found that there was no
sap but a thick syrupy substance.
This was what he was eating.
Glooscap stuck his finger in it
and sniffed it. Thcn he put the
smooth substance on his tongue.
He hadn't tasted anything so
sweet as that in his life. He then
and there pronounced it as
Maple Syrup. And until this day
this is what they call it.
