Zurich Citizens News, 1975-12-10, Page 8Page 8 - Citizens News, Dec. 10175 Rug weaver has customers from as far away as Sarnia By FAY PATTERSON Ward Neeb is a 53 year old retired farmer living in Zurich with his wife and three children. What is interesting about him is that he weaves rugs for himself and anyone else who wishes to buy them. Mr. Neeb farmed for thirty years south of Dashwood and afterwards near Teeswater. With his long history of diabetes he retired at Christmas in 1968 under doctor's orders. Manpower offered to retrain ward for another occupation but he felt that at 46, "jobs would be hard to find and I didn't want to move away from the country". In 1970 he bought a large (6'x12') loom for $350.00 and located it in the back kitchen of his home on Goshen Street. Ward makes mainly throw rugs but he also makes stair and hall runners, bathroom mats, bedside rugs and wall hangings. The width is always 26" but he will make the article any length the customer wishes. His ready made throw rugs are 4' long and cost $2.00 a foot. They are made out of cotton, felt, nylon, wool, plastic, or polyester knit. If you provide your own material such as old used cotton shirts, he only charges $1.00 per foot. Mr. Neeb supplies the warp which consists of 312 different coloured strings which cost him $3.00 per pound for white and 50(P more for coloured. Ward claims that the rugs last 18 years on the average and it takes approximately one ton of pull to tear a rug apart. They are machine wash- able but hang to dry. For $8.00 you get one rug for under your kitchen sink and, it will last 18 years. That is a bargain! As well as his loom, Mr. Neeb also has a motorized cutter which he uses to cut the cloth into 11/2" strips. He also has a very old sewing machine to sew up the strips of material when he has finished cutting them. This machine can sew anything including canvas and leather. Mr. Neeb has customers as far away as Sarnia but he wishes that "more of the folks from around the country would High schoolers to sing The High School Group of Hen - sail United Church met in the Fel- lowship Hall on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of games., Lunch was served by Deana, Cheryl, and Paul. He insists "that this is a hobby for me and al- though I can do up to ten rugs in a day, I am not in this for the money but only to please the people and occupy my time. Ward has advertised only once and that brought no res- ponse at all. Two years ago he put a month long ad in the Exeter paper for $20.00 but no one cane out to see him at all. Mr. Neeb's house is very easy to find. It is right in the centre of Zurich on the east side of the road from Dashwood. His sign is in the window. With the day of the artisan almost coming to an end but with the surge of people searching out homemade articles to make their home more personal, Ward will need to be prepared for the curious and interested who will come to his home. There is no street number but his sign in his porch window should be enough. Hensel!, personals Joan and Paul Dodds of Sea - forth spent last weekend with their grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Sim Roobat.
