at Hawks garne
Extra police protection was
needed at the Exeter arena Friday
night when the Belmont Ronwood
Bombers were in town to meet the
Exeter Hawks.
Several incidents late in the
second period and at its conclu-
sion led to a fracas during which
both benches emptied.
When order was restored and
play resumed, the Belmont club,
defending OHA champions
were able to hold a lead they
gained early in the game and
defeat the Hawks 5-2,
The Hawks who also played
in Mitchell Tuesday night, will
be at home at the Exeter arena
Friday night at 8:30 with Seaforth
supplying the opposition.
The second period trouble
started with about four minutes
to go when Phil Knight ran into
the Belmont goalie when he came
out of the crease to grab a loose
puck.
Three players from each club
received majors for fighting.
As the period was coming to a
close Belmont coach Harold
Capson sent one of his players
out on the ice to "get" Knight.
By this time some of the local
players were on their way to
the dressing room but they
returned and both benches
emptied onto the ice. .
Members of the Exeter police
department were called and they
were joined by officers of the
Exeter OPP detachment.
All in all Belmont picked up a
total of 27 penalties with the
Hawks receiving 17 assessments.
Getting back to the play-
ing of hockey, Belmont
took a lead after the first
period of play and increased
their margin to the finalscore of
5-2 by the end of 40 minutes of
play.
Belmont went in front 3-0 on
goals by Tim Bertelsen, Randy
Foster and Jeff Dale before the
Hawks could find the scoring
range.
The first Exeter score came
with only 30 seconds remaining
in the opening frame when Gerald
Weido converted a pass from
Phil Knight.
Each team scored one goal
in the first three minutes of the
second period. Chuck Peterson
hit for Belmont and Ken Pinder

a three-way combination with
John Van Gerwen and Rick
