(News photo) Snowmobile drag racer In the past two weeks, a Dashwood youth has made a name for himself in Western Ontario in snowmobile grass drag races. Eighteen year-old Brian Kipfer was the winner of the 340 super modified races at Chatham on November 16 and the following week he succeeded in finishing first in one race at Hully Gully and was runner-up in another. It was a five race series and the Dashwood youngsters accumulated the most points overall. The top speed on the final day at Chatham was turned in by Joe Wolfe of Cromwell, Michigan in the top race of the day in a Yamaha. Brian who started in go-kart racing at the age of 11 now has a total of 27 trophies from the two racing sports. At Hully Gully on November 23 Brian was first in the 340 :,aper modified and second in the 440 super modified with the same Alouette machine in the Ontario championship Red -X series. Speeds at Hully Gully were not clocked but Brian estimated speeds of close to 100 miles per hour on the straightaway. Brian has purchased a new Yamaha SRX with 440 dis- placement and will have it ready for the Ontario Snowmobile Racing Federation's "A" san- ctioned races at Hully Gully, December 27 and 28. Brian says he prefers racing on snow rather than grass. He commented, "the grass is harder on the machines." Fuel used in the racing mach- ines is 100 percent pure alcohol because engines reach higher RPM's. Before an upcoming race, Brian spends every night for a week getting his machine into top racing condition. He added, "many times I work into the wee hours of the morning." Brian works with his father, Elgin Kipfer at Dashwood Motors and operates a serivce repair shop for Port Franks Variety and Rentals. Hall Lamp severance pay After a wait of a little more than two years, former employees of the Hall Lamp plant at Huron Park will get at least some of their severance pay. United Auto Workers president Robert Nickerson announced last week that about 400 of the hourly rated employees will share in 3100,000 which has been paid into the Ontario Labour Ministry following a bankruptcy action brought about by the UAW. In the settlement each employ- ee will likely receive from *200 to $300 depending on length of service, the hourly rate they were receiving and the amount of notice they were given. The Union is now compiling a list of names and addresses and social insurance numbers of the employees. The amount of the settlement was only one-fifth of the $500,000 the union was asking for.
