Panthers
conference
champs
"The best football game I
have seen played in eight
years, " Those were the words of
South Huron District High School
football coach Doug Ellison
after his team won the Huron -
Perth Conference championship
in Stratford Saturday afternoon.
The junior Panthers scored a
decisive 26-7 win over the God-
erich Vikings. It was sweet
revenge for the Panthers who
lost their only game of the year
to the same Goderich team a
few weeks ago.
In the senior championship
final, the Redmen of Central
Huron of Clintondowned the
South Huron Panthers 17-12
after the South Huron club took
an early 12 point lead.
Saturday's junior victory mark-
ed the fifth time in the eight
year career of coach Doug Ell-
ison that his club has won the
Huron -Perth championship.
They have reached the finals in
all but one year.
The junior championship
came on a solid team effort.
Ellison commented, "The offence
ran the ball at Goderich, averag-
ing over five yards a carry
and the defence tackled hard.
We held Goderich to only two
first downs in the first half
and only a total of 84 yards
rushing in 32 attempts during the
entire game."
The Panthers controlled play
right from the opening whistle.
On one of the first offensive
plays of the game, Brad Cann
went 27 yards on a dive play
for a touchdown but it was called
back on a penalty.
Jeff O'Brien helped give
South Huron good field position
by running back punts of 1.7
and 15 yards. The defense didn 't
allow a Goderich first down in
the first quarter.
Late in the period, Paul Pooley
put the first six points on the
board of the Panthers with a
successful sweep of 25 yards.
Early in the second period,
Braden Whilsmith hit the God-
erich quarterback for a good loss
and Perry Pooley with good kicks
in excess of 40 yards kept South
Huron in good position.
In the Last minute of play, of
fake field goal attempt, Paul
Pooley and Rick Skinner went
deep for a pass and Jeff O' Brien
ran a short pattern and he took
a pass from quarterback Perry
Pooley and ran 15 yards for the
second major score.
Steve Beer's convert attempt
was successful and the score was
12-0.
On the first series of plays in
the third quarter, the Panthers
marched 75 yards on seven plays
for a touchdown culminated by
Brad Cann 's 36 yard gallop off
tackle.
Late in the quarter two succes-
sful Goderich passes led to their
only six points of the game.
Another hard tackle by Braden
Whilsmith early in the final
period jarred the ball loose from a
Goderich player and Paul Van
Gerwen was able to recover.
Later a Goderich drive was
stopped when Brad Taylor made
an interception.
Paul Pooley kicked the ball
deep into the Goderich end zone
to add another point to the South
Huron total.
Continued hard tackling follow-
ed and Brad Taylor caused a
fumble and Mike Charrette was
able to recover.
Late•in the game, Perry Pooley
passed to Rick Skinner for 25
yards and a touchdown. Pooley
passed to Brian Mercer fora two
point convert.
After the championship win,
voting was held to determine
Ow top players of the year.
Brad Cann was named the most
valuable with Jeff O'Brien taking
;offensive honours and Brad
Taylor was named the best on
defence.

Snow • • iles can be great fun..
This is what Ontario is doing
to help make sure they're
safe fun.
We now have new laws for motorized snow
vehicles, usually known as snowmobiles.
All snowmobiles must be registered with
Ontario's Ministry of Transportation and
Communications. (If previously registered,
they must be re -registered.) Registration is
free.
Also, people who operate snowmobiles
off their own property must now have a
permit to do so. The fee for the annual
permit is $10.00. (The only exceptions are.in
certain designated areas of remote north-
western Ontario.)
Actually, complying with the new reg-
ulations is easy. You can re -register a
previously -registered snowmobile—and
obtain your annual permit—at any Ministry
of Transportation and Communications
license -issuing office in Ontario (where you
get your automobile license).
If you buy a new snowmobile, the dealer
must register it on your behalf within six
days of the sale.
The number of your Registration Cer-
tificate must be attached to, or painted on,
both sides of your snowmobile's hood in
numbers 2" to 3" high, and must contrast
with your snowmobile's colour to be
easily seen.
Your permit will be affixed to your
Registration Certificate and you will be
given two adhesive stickers to affix to your
snowmobile's hood according to directions.
That's all there is to it.
Do not drive your snowmobile anywhere
(except on your own property) unless it has
been registered and you have a permit.
Make certain that you know and observe
all operating rules and safety regulations
for snowmobiles and be sure to check local
by-laws in the municipality where you use
your snowmobile.
