It's going to be an extreme pleasure to be able to write a weekly sports column on these pages and report generally on the sports scene in addition to being involved in p.hotography and some reporting. I am not a stranger when it comes to the Zurich arena or the local ball diamond. In fact, about 28 years ago I was a member of the Zurich baseball team. It was my first taste of baseball after playing quite a bit of softball and I spent a lot of time on the bench watching the veterans play. It was a very worthwhile experience. A few years later, our talents turned to the umpir- ing profession and I was behind the plate for many games in the Huron -Perth league and the Zurich diamond. It's easy to remember back to the first baseball game I ever umpired. It was between, you guessed it, Zurich and Dashwood. After that game, I received the best advice a young umpire could receive and it will never be forgotten. It came from Leroy O'Brien who I consid- er one of the best umpires in this part of the country in his day. It came after the game when I admitted I missed calling one curve ball a strike. Seems like his son Bili was the pitcher. He said, "Never admit to making a mistake. Forget about it and the important thing is don't try to even up mistakes. Two wrongs don't make a right." That advice was adhered to strictly through some 15 years of umpiring and, along with the use of common sense in any extreme circumstance, enabled us to,survive. Our experiences in hockey were part of the torrid rivalry between Dashwood and Zurich. Just remin- iscing for a moment we remember some of our Zurich rivals as Bill, Doug and Don O'Brien, Bob McKinley, Karl Decker, John Robinson, Bill Merner, Benny Gignac, Marcel Quesnel, Al Deslaurier and Junior Barash. Back to the umpiring of years ago, my partner for several years was Herb Turkheim, who is former owner of this, publication and now a valuable member of the ZurichCitizens News #nd. Exeter Independent News team. Enough for reminiscing and time to talk about current and future sporting events in this area. We hope to cover all aspects of sports in the district along with activities of other teams with which Zurich and area boys play with. The Exeter Junior Hawks have a good sprinkling of player talent from the Zurich, Hensall, Grand Bend and Dashwood areas and a good number of local youngsters were with the two South Huron District High School football teams this year. We expect to report regularly on the Exeter Hawks, the Zurich Flyers in the South Huron inter- mediate hockey league, all Zurich, Hensall and Grand Bend minor hockey teams, figure skating activities, bowling, badminton, etc. If anyone participates in a sport which we have neglected to mention or don't happen to know about, please give us a call and we will be happy to include your activity. In the same vein, if you know of something going on that is worthy of a picture, please get in touch With us. * * * Our sincere congratulations go out to the South Huron District High School junior football Panthers in winning the Huron -Perth Conference champion- ship Saturday afternoon in Stratford. It was the fifth title in eight years for South Huron coach Doug•Ellison. In that length of time, the team missed the final round in only one year. After the game, Doug told us he will be retiring at least temporarily from the coaching scene, mostly, to sort of rest up. He is currently secretary -treasurer of the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association, coach of the high school's wrestling teai'n and a member of the Exeter and district sports complex committee. We know that Doug will be extremely difficult to replace and hope he decides to return in a year or two. Knowing Doug as well as we do, it will probably be just as hard for him to be on the sidelines without direct participation, Hopefully, a picture of the Zurich area boys who are members of the championship junior club will appear on these pages this week.
