Hawks off to a good start, win two over Port Stanley The Exeter Hawks are off to a good start in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" West- ern division with two straight victories. Friday night at the Exeter arena, the Hawks scored a decis- ive 12-2 victory over the Port Stanley Lions. Earlier in the week in Port Stanley the Hawks won by a score of 8-1 over the same club. The Hawks are again managed by Fred Mommersteeg and the coach is Terry Bourne. Gerald Weido and Fred and Rick Mommersteeg of the Zur- ich area are valuable members of the Hawks along with Tom Hayt- er and Rick Grenier of Dashwood, Cam Haist from Grand Bend and Rick Ingram of the Hensall district. The Hawks will be back in action at the Exeter arena Sun- day night a 8 p.m. when the Tav- istock Braves supply the opposit- ion. Flyers lose in first SH contest The Zurich Flyers lost their first game of the schedule in South Huron Hockey League action last Tuesday night when they came out on the short end of a 10-7 score with the Exeter Mohawks. Glen Overholt was the top scorer for last year's champions with a two -goal effort while Pat Bedard, Jim Ramer, Ron Desj- ardine, Paul Corriveau and Bob Farquhar each blinked the red light once. Gary Parsons led the Mohawks scoring attack with a four -goal effort. Mike Cushman fired two, while single counters were reg- istered by Jack Glover, Al Knight Murray Glanville and Larry Willert. The first marker came from the stick of Cam Haist at 17.10 on an unassisted effort. In quick succession, Don McKellar hit on a pass from Matt Muller and John Van Gerwen fired the puck into the Port Stanley net on a play started by Phil Knight and Rick Grenier. In the second period, Gerald Weido and Brian Taylor broke loose with two goals apiece to pace a six goal Exeter scoring attack. Don McKellar and Matt Muller drew assists on the first Weido score and Paul Brooks helped on the second. Brian Taylor converted a pass from Ken Pinder on his first marker and assists on the second were credited to Tom. Hayter and Ken Pinder. The other two Exeter second period goals were fired by Cam Haist on an unassisted effort and Ken Pinder as he converted passes from Rick Grenier and John Van Gerwen. Hawk goals in the third period were fired by John Van Gerwen, Don McKellar and Bill Van Bergen. Gerald Weido assisted on the goals by McKellar and Van Bergen while Ken Pinder and Brian Taylor assisted on Van Gerwen's successful shot.
