The Workmen's Compens-
ation Board has increased
the penalties on employers for
failure to report work-related
accidents. Where an employer
fails to report an accident
which called for medical aid
only, the Board can now
order a penalty of not less than
$25 and not more than $250.
Employers who fail to report
an accident which results in a
claim for compensation can be
penalised by a charge of not
less than $50 and not more
than $250.
The Workmen's Compen-
sation Act requires that an
employer must report an
employee's accident within
three days of learning that the
accident happened.
"Accidents not being
promptly reported is one of
our biggest problems," said
Michael Starr, Chairman of
the Workmen's Compensat-
ion Board."Twenty-five
per cent of incidents are first
reported to us by physicians
and frequently aren't report-
ed by employers at. all until
we ask them for information.
Without the employer's
report, we cannot pay comp-
ensation and this can cause
considerable hardship to the
injured worker. By increasing
the penalties, we hope that we
can speed up accident -report-
ing procedures. The sooner
we hear, the sooner we can
help."
