Air show features top pilots
A SIS Pitt's Special will be
one of the star performers
at the Exeter Lions Club Air
Show at Huron Park this
Saturday and Sunday. This
tiny, but powerful red and
white biplane, CF -TRH,
will be flown by Canada's
National Aerobatic Champion,
Gerry Younger of Guelph.
Designed by veteran air-
craft engineer Curtis Pitts
of Florida, this aircraft type
won the World Aerobatic
Title for the USA team and
has now been rated the best
competitive aerobatic aircraft
in the world.
Gerry Younger's single
place Pitts is capable of
speeds up to 220 miles per
hour and can execute a 360
degree snap roll in the wink of
an eye. Powered by a 180
horsepower, 360 cubic inch
Lycoming engine, the sleek
little biplane climbs at over
2600 feet per minute on its
17 foot 4 inch wings.
This high performance
competition aircraft puts on
one of the most spectacular
aerobatic demonstrations
ever seen in Canada. Pilot
Younger, who hand -built
the $24,000 aircraft will
include vertical torque rolls,
a tail slide and the incred-
ible Lumcevak tumbling
maneuver in his airshow
performance. He is the only
Canadian pilot to execute
this sequence.
If you go jogging 1 1/2
miles a day and practice
screaming through the sky
at nearly 200 miles per
hour in a tiny aerobatic
biplane, you may be in shape
to take on Canada's Nat-
ional Aerobatic Champion.
This is just part of the rig-
orous training schedule that
Younger puts himself through
every good flying day of the
year. •
And Gerry would like to

BALLOON GOES UP - From the days of Joseph Mont-
golfier and his first paper balloon in 1782, to the present
day record setting aeronauts, the hot air balloon has been
a fascinating source of entertainment in man's quest to rise
above the ground. The balloon, which is 35 feet in diameter,
and 40 feet high, is powered by hot air from specially design-
ed propane burners situated above the gondola and below
the opening in the specially processed nylon canopy. This
balloon will be seen at the Air Show on Saturday and Sunday
at Huron Park

do the same. "One of the
goals of Aerobatics Canada is
to get together a competit-
ive Canadian team to take
part in world competition,"
says Mr. Younger. Gerry,
who rigidly controls his body
weight and physical condit-
ion, would like nothing more
than to see a Canadian Team
ready for World Aerobatic
Competition in Russia in
1976.
Mr. Younger was the first
Canadian pilot to enter int-
ernational competition and
the first Canadian to comp-
ete in the unlimited category.
He was also instrumental in
getting the Pitts SIS air-
craft certified to perform
aerobatics in Canada.
Gerry attributes constant
practice and physical cond-
itioning, plus a great deal
of skill in retaining the Can-
adian title for the past four
years. He says, "the un-
limited program is so stren-
uous that two perforniences
in international competition in
the course of a day is about
all you can take."
Air show on
Saturday,Sunday
Graceful maneuvers and
difficult outside loops will
highlight the performances
of anothr Canadian champ-
ionship pilot in a beautiful
Balanca Decathelon at the
upcomong airshow on Satur-
day and Sunday at Huron
Park.
Forty-two year old Young
Pelton graduated to aerobat-
ics following years of regular
flying and a stint at Royal
Roads as an R.C.A.F. navig-
ator. Young holds the Sports-
man's Intermediate and
Advanced Badges of the Int-
ernational Aerobatic Club,
and won the Intermediate
Championship early this
summer at the Canadian Open
Competition in Collingwood.
The beautifully painted
Decathelon looks very much
like a Citabria, but is strong-
er and is stresses to 6 G's
t and 5 G's -. It has a const-
ant speed propeller along with
a 150 horsepower engine with
inverted fuel and oil systems
which allow it to fly inverted.
In his airshow sequence,
Young Pelton will perform
square loops, rolling turns,
and inverted flight. This
aerobatic demonstration will
be a fine exaple of the type
of flying the ordinary pilot
can achieve with a few year's
training in moderately priced
all purpose aircraft.
The event is sponsored
by the Exeter Lions Club.
