AIR CUSHION ICEBREAKER PLATFORM design for the Canadian Coast Guard ship Montcalm
is shown in this artist's concept from Bell Aerospace Canada Division of Textron Canada Ltd.,
Grand Bend, Ontario. Developed under contract to the Air Cushion Vehicle Division, Marine
Administration, Transport Canada, the concept is a result of tests with models and full scale
ACV icebreakers. The platform is 53 feet wide by 32 feet long and is designed to provide a
variety of weights and cushion pressures. Water pumped into the platform's ballast tanks give it
an operating weight range from 170, 350 to 365, 000 pounds, with cushion pressures from .7 to 1.5
pounds per square inch. If built, the platform would be used for full scale evaluations of the
concept. Model tests have shown that an ACV platform provides significant improvement in the
capabilities of an icebreaking ship.

Fiddlers
contest
The fifth annual Ontario
Fiddler's Contest in Hensall
June 20 and 21 will offer prize
money of $2, 540.
The Ward Allen Memorial
Trophy and $'700 will go to Ont-
ario's top fiddle player, as det-
ermined by the contest.
There are a total of eight
fiddling classes, and three step -
dancing classes.
According to contest chairman
Wayne Reid, anybody can enter,
although he conceded most of
the entrants "travel the circuit."
Entrants may be getting a
break this year. Defending cham-
pion Chuck Joyce, of London
will not be entering. Joyce who
won the championship for the
past three years in a row, is not
eligible to enter this year.
Mr. Reid also stated that a
few entries have been received
already, but the majority of
them will come in the last two
weeks before the contest.
Last year's audience to the
THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1975
competitions was about 3, 000,
estimates Mr. Reid. However
he said it is difficult to accurateh
guess the number because
"people are coming and going
all the time."
To facilitate campers, the
camp site beside the arena wild
be opened. It consists of about
200 camp sites.
The eliminations will begin
