Flyers end schedule in first
A win and a losss in their
final two games of the regular
schedule was all the Zurich
Flyers needed to assure them-
selves of a first place finish
in the South Huron Hockey
League. Last Thursday night at
Huron Park they came out on
the short end of a 4-3 score
with Centralia College and then
on Sunday night they topped
Jura 7-5 in the Thedford Arena,
to clinch first place.
By virtue of their first -place
finish the Flyers will meet the
Exeter Mohawks in•the first
round of the playoffs. Exeter
ended up in third place. Sec-
ond place Shipka Bears will
meet fourth -place ,Centralia
College. Dates for the playoffs
were not available at press
time.
The Flyers tool< a 2-0 lead
in the first period against the
College crew on Thursday
night, and held on to a 2-1
lead by the end of the second.
Three quick goals by the
College in the third session
proved to be the difference in
the two teams, as the Flyers
only managed to get one back
before the game ended.
Rod Chapman sparked the
Zurich attack with two big
goals, both in the first period.
Bob Merner tallied the final
marker in the third.
The local squad picked up
a total of 10 penalties, includ-
ing two majors, a misconduct
and a match. The College
were assessed six minors and
one major.
Pat Bedard was the big gun
in the 7-5 victory over Jura on
Sunday night, as he pumped in
three big goals. Glen Overholt,
Rich Schilbc,Ron Rader and Ken
Swale each blinked the red
light once.
The two teams exchanged
four first period goals, and in
the second frame the Jura squad
went ahead 5-4. In the third
period the Flyers came back
strong with three unanswered
goals.
Nine penalties were called
against Jura, with the Zurich
crew picking up six minors.
