rovince faces tight power situation
Ontario faced a tight electri-
cal energy supply situation to-
day because of a combination
of technical problems at Ontario
Hydro's Naticoke generating
station, unusually high demand
as a result of cold temperatures,
and continuing low water levels.
Hydro has cut all exports of
power to interconnected utilit-
ies and is purchasing electrici-
ty from New York State.
Cuts have been made to
industrial customers with inter-
ruptible service.
Hydro is examining the pos-
sibility of purchasing power
from Michigan, Manitoba and
Quebec but their utilities are
also facing tight supply situa-
tions.
However, Hydro officials
say 'they are optimistic the util-
ity will be able to meet this
month's peak requirements
unless weather and water condi-
tions further deteriorate or
there is another unexpected
problem on the generating
system.
Four 500,000 kilowatt gener-
ating units are out of service
at the Nanticoke generating
station on the north shore of
Lake Erie, south of Hamilton.
One is off line because of a
rotor problem and three others
have been shut down due to a
brittle conditon in hangers used
to support their boilers. There is
little likelihood repairs can be
completed before Christmas:-
The
hristmas;"'The hangers are made of cold
rolled stainless steel and
have become brittle due to long-
term exposure to high tempera-
tures required for unit opera-
tion.
The supply problem is com-
pounded by the fact that
1,000,000 kilowats of electricity
are locked in at Lennox generat-
ing station, near Bath, west of

The Grand Bend Santa Claus
parade last Saturday was a huge
success. Close to 30 floats
entered the parade along with
majorettes, a "brass band"
made up of Grand Bend clowns
and music provided by loud-
speakers.
In the commercial section,
Bell Aerospace and the Green
Forest went together on a float
which took first place. Grand
Bend Cleaners took second
prize and the Cheryl Anne
placed third.
In the non-commercial sect-
ion of the parade, the Grand
Bend Lionettes and the nursery
school float took first prize
much to the joy of the toddlers
riding on the float. The Brown-
ies were second and the Grand
Bend Mites hockey team came
third.
The Port Franks Major-
ettes took first place in the
clown and majorette section
with the Grand Bend "brass
band" placing second.
The most unusual float in
the parade was an out of town
float, a turtle by the Ailsa
Craig Lions which took first
prize. The Shriners placed
second in the out of town cate-
gory.
After the parade the child-
ren thronged to the public
school where Santa was hard
put handling the mob of child -
