On Thursday, November
25th, the Grade 8 pupils of
Huron Centennial School jour-
neyed over 100 years into the
past, to the days of pioneers.
We had been studying about
pioneer settlements and the
lives of pioneers in history
classes so when Mrs. Moffat
asked us about having a pioneer
day where we could actually
do some of their activities we
were certainly keen: The stu-
dents in their pioneer costumes
were busy making butter and
bread throughout the day. We
were lucky to have spinning
demonstrations performed by
Mrs. Van Essen.
The operation of spinning
wool is fascinating. Mrs. Van
Essen showed the students the
washing of wool to get it clean,
the drying, picking and carding
of wool and finally the spin-
ning. She spun the wool on old
drop spindles and later let the
students try. She had used
natural dyes of goldenrod and
onion skins in the dying of some
of her articles. Mrs. Moffatt
showed some old articles—an
apple peeler, old cow bell,
copper boiler, mouse -trap, can-
dle maker, butter churn, cherry
pitter, sausage grinder. Mrs.
Van Essen showed the students
a foot warmer which was used
in churches over 100 years ago
in the Netherlands.
For lunch, the girls of the
classes made box lunches and
they were auctioned off by the
teachers. By the end of the day
we were able to sample our
homemade bread and butter.
It was a fun and interesting
day and it taught the students
a lot about the way pioneers
lived.
